If a music file won’t play on your Android phone, first open it in a second audio player. If it works there, troubleshoot the original player; if it fails in both, check that the file finished downloading and that its format and container are supported. Then check the player’s permission, refresh the app, and confirm the file is stored where you expect.
1. Find out whether the problem is the file or the player
- Open the same track in another audio player already installed on your phone. You may also be able to choose a different app from the file’s Open with menu.
- If the track plays in the second app, focus on the original player: update it, check its permissions, and try the app-refresh steps below.
- If it fails in both apps, make sure the download or file copy has finished. A partial or damaged file may not play. Then check its format and container.
This comparison is a practical diagnostic suggestion, not a guarantee: it appears in a Google Files Help Community response, where community answers may not be verified.
2. Check whether Android and the player can decode the file
Audio support depends on the Android version, the specific app, the encoding profile, and how the audio is packaged. The Android 12 Compatibility Definition Document requires audio decoding support for implementations that declare audio output support for AAC profiles, FLAC, MP3, MIDI, Vorbis, PCM/WAVE, and Opus. It also specifies container requirements for some codecs. Those are Android 12 platform requirements—not a promise that every player, handset, or file combination will work.
For example, the Android 12 document lists AAC in containers including 3GPP, MP4/M4A, raw ADTS AAC, MPEG-TS, and Matroska under specified conditions. It also lists FLAC in Matroska or MP4/M4A for decoding only. An unusual codec profile, incompatible container, older device, or damaged file can still cause playback to fail.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- If the file is in an uncommon format, try a player that supports its codec and container.
- If another player accepts it but your preferred one does not, use the compatible player or convert a copy to a format your preferred player supports. Keep the original until you have confirmed the converted file plays.
- Do not assume a file is compatible just because its extension says MP3, FLAC, or another familiar format; the extension alone does not establish its encoding or integrity.
3. Allow the player to access music and audio
- Open Settings → Apps → [your music player] → Permissions.
- Allow Music and audio if it is denied.
- Reopen the player and try the track again.
Google describes the Music and audio permission as access to music and other audio files on the device. The precise menu names can vary by Android version and phone maker; see Google Play Help’s explanation of app permissions.
4. Refresh the player without deleting its data
- Update the music player through the app store where you installed it.
- Close and reopen it. If that does not help, restart the phone.
- Clear the player’s cache: open Settings → Apps → [your music player] → Storage & cache → Clear cache, or the equivalent menu on your phone.
Google says, “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data.” Menu labels vary across devices. A Google Files Help Community response also suggests updating, restarting, and clearing cache for an app-specific playback issue; treat it as troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee.

Use Clear storage or Clear data only as a last resort. Google says, “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data.” That may reset the player or remove app-managed state such as settings or locally stored downloads. Check the player’s own guidance first. Google’s steps and explanation are at Fix an installed Android app that isn’t working.
5. Look for downloads in the app that downloaded them
For tracks copied to your phone or downloaded as ordinary files, check Files or your device maker’s file browser. The Files app and its steps can vary by device. A track downloaded inside a streaming or media app may instead appear only in that app’s library or downloads area, rather than as a normal file you can open elsewhere. Google advises, “To delete content from other sources, delete from the app that you used to download it.” Check the downloading app before concluding that the track is missing. See Google’s guidance on freeing up space on Android and the related Files Help Community playback discussion.

6. If the track plays but you hear nothing
First play a different, known-good track and check the player and device volume. Also check whether sound is routed to a connected Bluetooth device. These are general diagnostic checks, not causes established by the cited Android sources. If the file is silent in more than one player, investigate or replace the source copy before changing system settings.
