To adjust AI speaking practice, first check which controls your service actually offers: Google Translate lets you set a proficiency level and choose or create a scenario, while Preply offers a level control and tutor-created scenarios. Feedback also varies: Google’s activity-end rating is product feedback, whereas the British Council describes feedback on a learner’s English. These features are not interchangeable, and availability can depend on the service.
Choose the service control that matches what you want to change
| Service | Level or difficulty | Conversation topics | Feedback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Translate practice | Choose Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced; change the proficiency later in Settings under Languages > Proficiency. A separate Make it harder / Make it easier choice is documented for listening rounds. | Choose a recommended scenario, explore more, or create one based on your goal. | Thumbs-up/down and optional written or screenshot feedback about the product experience. |
| Preply Scenario Practice | Manually change your level from the Practice tab using the level icon. Lesson Insights may also update it as your speaking improves through lessons. | Use everyday examples or a custom scenario created by a tutor. | Not stated on the cited scenario page. |
| British Council AI speaking practice | Not stated on the cited page. | Practice English for work, travel, or social situations. | Personalized feedback may cover grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and clarity, depending on level. |
Change proficiency or difficulty in Google Translate
Set your starting proficiency
- Open the latest Google Translate app and tap Practise.
- Choose the interface language and the language you want to practise.
- Select Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced.
- Describe your motivation or choose from the listed options, then start a practice activity.
Adjust listening-round difficulty
At the end of a listening round, choose Make it harder or Make it easier. If you skip the choice, Google says difficulty stays unchanged for the next round. The help instructions attach this control to listening rounds; they do not establish that it changes the difficulty of speaking conversations.
Change proficiency later
- Open Google Translate and go to Settings.
- Choose Languages, then Proficiency.
- Select the new level.
Choose a useful conversation topic
Google Translate: select or create a scenario
After setting up practice, select a recommended scenario, explore more scenarios, or create one that fits your goal. The documented examples of goals include travel, school, work, and connecting with friends or family. A more specific setting—such as asking for directions while travelling or discussing a task at work—can make it easier to focus on language you expect to use.
Preply: use a tutor-created scenario
Preply describes short AI-powered speaking tasks with examples such as asking for directions, ordering at a restaurant, and introducing yourself in a meeting. Tutors can create custom scenarios, and the tasks are described as tailored to the learner’s current level.

Understand what “feedback” means in each app
Google Translate: send feedback about the product
At the end of an activity, choose a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. To add detail or a screenshot, choose Share more feedback and submit it. This reports your experience with the product; the help instructions do not describe it as an assessment or correction of your speaking.

British Council: receive feedback on English
The British Council says feedback may address grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and clarity, depending on level. When you end a conversation, the service notifies you if you have spoken enough for it to provide feedback. The page does not establish that every dimension appears every time or describe a separate manual correction setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check availability and treat AI output cautiously
Google describes Translate practice as a limited beta and lists supported language pairs and countries on its current help page. Check that page and the app to confirm access, since availability can change. Google Translate Help warns: “Generative AI is experimental and can be inaccurate.” Treat generated practice and responses accordingly, especially when accuracy matters.
