A subscription can be cheaper if you play several games included in your exact plan during the time you pay for it. Buying games one at a time can cost less if you only want a few, will keep playing them for years, or want a physical copy. The fair comparison is your subscription cost over a set period versus the current prices of the specific games you would actually buy—not the advertised size of a service’s entire catalog.
How to work out which option costs less
Choose a time period first—such as the next 12 months—and compare costs over that same period. A subscription price buys access for its term; an individual purchase buys a particular game. Make a list of games you genuinely expect to play, then check that each subscription title is available on your platform, in your region, and in the tier you would pay for.
- Calculate the subscription cost: use the live price of the precise plan and term you expect to keep. Include only the months you expect to subscribe.
- Price the games you would otherwise buy: compare the same titles, editions, platform, and time period. Check current store prices and, if relevant to you, legitimate used or physical-copy options.
- Count only usable catalog games: remove titles that are unavailable in your region or plan, or that you would not choose to play.
- Account for benefits you would actually use: if you would otherwise pay separately for online multiplayer or another included feature, show that value separately. Do not treat every advertised perk as savings.
- Consider how long you need access: compare the subscription term with the time you expect to finish, replay, or return to each game.
If the subscription is less than the cost of the games and benefits you would genuinely use during that period, it may be the cheaper choice for that period. If it costs more, or if continued access matters more than short-term access, buying may suit you better.
A simple break-even example
Suppose your chosen plan costs S for the period you are comparing, and the current prices of the games you would otherwise buy add up to P. If an included feature is worth B to you because you would otherwise pay for it, compare S − B with P. The subscription has the lower cash cost when S − B is less than P. Use your own game prices and realistic value for benefits; there is no single break-even number that applies across platforms and countries.

What subscription prices and benefits look like in the U.S.
The examples below are U.S. prices reported on October 4, 2026. They are plan examples, not a promise that the same price or catalog applies in another country or remains unchanged. Xbox’s captured official plan page did not state prices, so its live local price must be checked before comparing.
| Service and plan | U.S. price and term | What the plan offers relevant to the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Essential | $79.99 for 12 months | Monthly games, online multiplayer, and other core benefits. PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | $134.99 for 12 months | Essential benefits plus the Game Catalog, which PlayStation describes as hundreds of games. Catalog titles may have end dates. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | $159.99 for 12 months | Lower-tier benefits plus a Classics Catalog, game trials, and streaming features. |
| Nintendo Switch Online individual | $19.99 per year | Online play and a curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy library, among other benefits. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual | $49.99 per year | Base benefits plus selected GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and SEGA Genesis classics, and selected upgrade packs or DLC. |
| Nintendo Switch Online family | $34.99 per year for up to eight accounts | Family membership can lower the per-person cost if the group uses the accounts. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack family | $79.99 per year for up to eight accounts | At eight participating accounts, the arithmetic cost is about $10 per account per year. |
| Xbox Game Pass plans | Price not stated on the captured official page; check the live local price | Xbox advertised 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and 300+ for PC Game Pass when checked in 2026. These counts are not guarantees that a particular title is available to you. |
For perspective, dividing the listed annual PlayStation prices by 12 gives approximate annual-cost equivalents of $6.67 per month for Essential, $11.25 for Extra, and $13.33 for Premium. These are arithmetic comparisons of the 12-month prices, not monthly plan prices. Nintendo’s family-plan arithmetic at the maximum eight accounts is about $4.37 per account per year for the base plan and about $10.00 for the Expansion Pack plan; those figures assume all eight accounts participate.

Nintendo Switch Online is not directly equivalent to a subscription centered on a broad catalog of current full-price games. Nintendo’s descriptions emphasize compatible online play, classic-game libraries, cloud saves for compatible games, and other benefits; the Expansion Pack adds further classics and selected DLC. Nintendo notes that selected DLC requires the full version of its game. Count those benefits only if they match what you want to play or use.
What you give up when you cancel or a game leaves
Subscription access is conditional
Xbox says Game Pass access lasts until the membership is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the catalog. Xbox also says titles, features, numbers, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform. Recurring billing is on by default, so check the renewal setting and next billing date if you only intend to subscribe for a limited period.

PlayStation says Game Catalog games may have end dates. Add-ons bought for a catalog game become inaccessible if membership ends or that game leaves the service; they can be used again if you resubscribe or buy the game. An add-on purchase therefore does not, by itself, preserve access to the catalog game it belongs to.
Buying is better suited to long-term access
A purchased game is not subject to a subscription catalog’s departure date, so buying can be preferable if you want to keep returning to a title after a membership ends. A physical copy also gives you a tangible item, though availability and prices depend on the game, platform, and retailer. Compare that enduring access with the subscription’s cost across the full period you expect to play, rather than only the first month.

Which option fits your play habits?
- A subscription is more likely to make sense if several games you want are included in your tier, you expect to play them within a defined subscription period, and you value included features such as multiplayer or classics.
- Individual purchases are more likely to make sense if you mainly want one or two games, expect to keep playing them after the subscription term, or value owning a physical copy.
- A mixed approach can be practical if you use a subscription for games you want to try or finish during a short period, then buy particular favorites you want to keep accessing. Check whether the game’s edition, saved progress, and add-ons will suit the version you buy.
- Family plans can change the arithmetic when multiple people actually use the included accounts. Divide the annual cost by participating accounts, not by the plan’s maximum capacity if some accounts will go unused.
Why headline catalog size is not a value calculation
Xbox’s stated counts—500+ for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and 300+ for PC Game Pass—and PlayStation’s description of Extra’s catalog as hundreds of games are vendor descriptions of plan scope, not independent measures of value. They do not tell you how many titles you personally want, whether those titles are available on your platform and in your region, or how long they will remain available.
Catalog policies can also affect a specific franchise or game. In an April 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox said future Call of Duty titles would not join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch and would instead be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. Already included Call of Duty titles would remain available subject to normal catalog terms. If a particular new release is the reason you are considering a subscription, verify its plan and release timing rather than assuming it will be available on launch day.
