For full-time cloth diapering, the number you need depends mainly on how often you wash and which diaper system you use. Kanga Care’s newborn chart recommends 12 diapers for daily washing, 24 for washing every other day, and 36 for washing every three days, based on an assumption of 10–12 changes per day. Treat those counts as planning estimates, not universal requirements; allow extra capacity if drying takes time or laundry may be delayed.
How many newborn cloth diapers should you buy?
Use your expected cloth changes per day and the number of days between washes to estimate how many items must be in rotation. Kanga Care’s vendor guide assumes 10–12 newborn changes daily. Lalabye Baby’s 2023 guide uses 14–15 changes daily and recommends a larger count for an every-other-day wash schedule. These are different planning assumptions, not a single established standard.

Both recommendations come from vendor guides, rather than a controlled study or clinical standard. Your actual count may vary with your baby’s changing pattern, laundry access, drying time, and whether some changes use disposables.
How to calculate a stash for your wash routine
A practical planning formula is: cloth changes per day × days between washes + a buffer for laundry and drying. Count only changes you expect to handle in cloth, then add enough spare capacity to cover the time items are soiled, being washed, or drying.

Mom Loves Best suggests estimating daily changes multiplied by days between washes, plus one buffer day. Its example uses 11 changes a day and a two-day wash interval to arrive at 33. That is one editorial planning method, not a validated universal rule; choose a buffer that reflects your own wash and drying routine.
How many complete diapers, prefolds, and covers do you need?
All-in-one and pocket diapers
Count one complete diaper for each cloth change. A used all-in-one or pocket diaper goes into the wash after the change, so it is not available again until it has been cleaned and dried.

Prefolds, flats, or fitted diapers with covers
Plan on a fresh absorbent layer for every change. You may reuse a cover if it remains clean; replace it when it is soiled. This means you generally need more absorbent layers than covers, but the exact cover count depends on how often covers stay clean and how quickly laundry turns around.
Lalabye Baby describes 8–10 covers alongside absorbency for 24–30 changes in its broader birth-to-potty-training cover system. That is a vendor-specific system recommendation, not a universal count for newborns alone.

What if you plan to use cloth part-time?
Size the stash to the changes you will actually do in cloth rather than automatically buying a full-time rotation. Kanga Care says 8–12 diapers may suffice for part-time use, depending on how many daily changes are cloth. For a more tailored estimate, multiply your expected cloth changes per day by the days between washes, then add a suitable laundry and drying buffer.
How many times does a newborn need changing each day?
Published estimates vary. Kanga Care’s newborn stash chart assumes 10–12 changes daily; Lalabye Baby uses 14–15 in its newborn recommendation. A Pampers guide updated June 18, 2026 estimates 8–12 diaper changes daily in the first weeks, but it addresses disposable-diaper planning, not cloth-stash sizing. Use these figures as context rather than as a promise of exactly how often your baby will need changing.

Diaper counts are also different from health-monitoring indicators. California WIC’s 2023 breastfeeding newborn chart says that after day five a newborn will have at least six wet diapers, and that stool counts vary. That guidance is about monitoring a newborn, not calculating the total number of cloth changes or the size of a cloth stash.
