To prevent cloth diaper leaks, first check whether the absorbent insert is saturated or whether liquid is escaping around a gap. A soaked insert points toward changing sooner or adding compatible absorbency; a mostly dry insert points toward fit, insert placement, or moisture wicking onto clothing. Check those basics before changing wash products or replacing the diaper.
Start by examining the wet diaper
Before changing your setup, note where the leak appeared, when it happened, and what the diaper and clothes feel like. The wetness pattern can help separate a capacity problem from a fit or wicking problem.
If the insert is soaked
A saturated insert, especially with dampness near the leg openings, suggests the diaper may have reached capacity and moisture has wicked outward. Try changing sooner or adding a compatible absorbent layer, while checking that the extra bulk does not loosen the leg seal. The Cloth Option suggests being prepared to change cloth diapers around every two hours or more often; treat that as general guidance, not a schedule that suits every child or situation. The Cloth Option’s leak guidance discusses this approach.
If the absorbent part is dry or only lightly wet
Look for a gap or a route around the absorbent material. Check that the diaper sits evenly, the leg elastic follows the body without a visible opening, and no insert or clothing is caught outside the waterproof cover. A loose seal can allow urine to escape before it reaches the insert. Kanga Care’s FAQ and The Cloth Option identify fit and placement as possible causes.

Check fit, insert placement, and pressure
For pocket diapers, smooth the insert so it lies flat and reaches the end of the pocket. Check that it has not bunched up or shifted away from the wet zone. An insert that is too narrow or small may leave part of the diaper without enough absorbency; adding material can help, but excess bulk can push the diaper away from the legs and create a gap. Follow the diaper maker’s instructions and make sure the leg seal remains close.
Consider whether leaks happen mainly after time in a car seat, carrier, stroller, or tight clothing. Pressure can squeeze moisture out of a saturated diaper, according to Kanga Care. If leaks occur only under pressure or after extended wear, that pattern can help distinguish capacity or compression from a persistent fit problem.

Tell repelling and wicking apart
If liquid seems not to enter the absorbent layers, repelling may be involved. New natural-fiber diapers may need initial washes to remove natural oils, and fabric softeners or some creams can affect absorption. Residue from washing and creams used without a liner are also among the possible contributors listed by Kanga Care. Check the care instructions for the exact diaper and review your household’s wash conditions before changing detergent or attempting a deep clean. The Cloth Option’s guidance covers preparation and product-related absorption issues.
Wicking is different: moisture can travel outward when absorbent fabric or clothing touches the outside of the diaper. Inspect the waist and leg edges, and make sure the waterproof cover contains all absorbent material. Dampness at an edge does not by itself prove that the waterproof shell has failed.

Use a simple troubleshooting sequence
- Record the pattern. Note the leak location, timing, and whether it followed a long stretch of wear or pressure from clothing, a seat, or a carrier.
- Inspect the diaper and clothes. Look for absorbent fabric outside the cover, damp clothing touching an edge, and visible gaps at the waist or legs.
- Check the fit and insert. Make sure the diaper sits evenly and the insert is flat, correctly positioned, and large enough for the wet zone.
- Check saturation. If the insert is soaked, try a shorter change interval or added absorbency; if it is mostly dry, focus first on the seal, placement, and possible repelling.
- Review care and condition if needed. Follow the maker’s instructions for preparation and washing, and inspect for wear if fit and absorbency do not explain the leak.
Where practical, change one factor at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a shorter interval, repositioned insert, or another adjustment addressed the problem.
When to suspect wear or damage
If the same area keeps leaking after fit, insert placement, and absorbency are addressed, inspect the elastic and waterproofing. Relaxed elastics or compromised waterproofing may be involved, but a leak alone does not establish a manufacturing defect. Ask the diaper maker for product-specific repair or warranty guidance before replacing a cover. Kanga Care also cautions that stripping is not routine maintenance and that improper methods can damage diapers or worsen buildup; follow the manufacturer’s care directions rather than treating stripping as a first-line fix. Choose an adjustment that fits the evidence
Use the observed pattern to choose the least disruptive next step. More absorbency makes sense when the insert is saturated and the added bulk preserves the seal. More frequent changes address a diaper that reaches capacity before the next change. Correcting placement or fit makes more sense when the insert is still mostly dry or moisture is escaping at an edge. A booster insert is an option when capacity is the issue and the diaper’s design accepts one; cotton and cotton/hemp are examples discussed in the nonprofit guidance, not universal best choices. The Cloth Option
Cloth diapers generally need more frequent changes than disposables, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org guidance on cloth and disposable diapers. If fit and absorbency are sound but the same spot continues to leak, contact the maker about the diaper’s condition and support options.
