Moving a game from an HDD to an SSD can shorten loading when the game is waiting on storage, and may reduce pauses caused by slow asset streaming. It will not necessarily improve every game’s load times or fix freezes: stutter can also come from shader compilation, CPU or GPU limits, or other parts of the PC.
When an SSD can improve gaming
Long load screens
If a game is waiting for data to be read from a slow hard drive, an SSD can reduce storage-bound loading. The size of the improvement depends on the game, drive, and PC; there is no single time or percentage that applies to every HDD-to-SSD upgrade. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as technology designed to reduce loading and support detailed asset streaming, but the benefit depends on the game and system. Microsoft’s DirectStorage announcement explains its intended role.
Pauses while playing
Some games read assets from storage as you move through the world. If the drive cannot supply those assets quickly enough, the game may pause or hitch while it catches up. An SSD can help when storage is the limiting part of that process, but a pause alone does not prove the drive is at fault. Microsoft’s DirectStorage 1.1 overview describes loading and decompressing assets as part of the pipeline.
Why an SSD may not fix freezes or stutter
Shader compilation
Games may compile shaders at launch or while playing. That work is distinct from reading game files, so a faster drive is not a guaranteed fix. Microsoft notes that just-in-time shader compilation can cause stuttering; its Advanced Shader Delivery announcement explains why shader compilation can delay or interrupt play.

Other system limits
CPU or GPU limits, memory pressure, a game bug, or another system issue can also cause low frame rates, freezes, or stutter. An SSD is not a general frame-rate upgrade, and it cannot be assumed to cure symptoms that are not storage-related.
NVMe, SATA, and DirectStorage
For a PC and game that support DirectStorage, Microsoft says an NVMe SSD maximizes the feature’s I/O performance. That does not mean NVMe is required to see any benefit: Microsoft says benefits may be visible on other storage devices too. The game must implement DirectStorage, and the outcome depends on the rest of the system. Microsoft’s announcement provides this qualification.

For a practical upgrade, compatibility comes first. Check your PC’s documentation for supported interface and form factor, then check the game’s requirements. An NVMe drive is an option for a compatible system and workload; a SATA SSD can be relevant where the PC supports SATA but not NVMe. Choose enough capacity for the games you intend to install.
What Microsoft’s “nearly 3x faster” result means
Microsoft reported nearly three-times-faster scene loading in a DirectStorage 1.1 sample using GPU decompression rather than CPU decompression. Its illustrated sample took 0.8 seconds with GPU/GDeflate and 2.36 seconds with CPU/Zlib. This is a comparison of decompression approaches in that sample—not an HDD-versus-SSD test or a prediction of what a typical drive upgrade will achieve. How to tell whether storage is the likely bottleneck
- Slow initial or level loads: An SSD may help if the game is waiting on drive reads.
- Repeatable pauses while entering new areas: Storage-bound asset streaming is one possible cause, particularly if the game reads assets during play.
- Stutter at shader-heavy moments or first launch: Shader compilation may be involved; changing drives alone may not solve it.
- Low frame rate throughout play: An SSD is unlikely to raise FPS generally; investigate other system limits as well.
These symptoms are clues, not a definitive diagnosis. Before buying, confirm that the drive fits and connects to your PC, check the game’s storage requirements, and consider whether the problem occurs during loading or throughout gameplay.
