Choose a phone by setting a firm spending limit, ranking what you need it to do, and comparing shortlisted models on those priorities—not by assuming the most expensive option is best. Before buying, also check the exact model’s software-update policy, warranty and repair options, and availability in your region.
1. Set your total budget before comparing phones
Decide the maximum you can spend, including the storage configuration you actually need and any required accessories or service costs. This prevents attractive upgrades from quietly pushing a purchase beyond your limit. There is no research-backed universal “right” phone budget: price labels depend on market and time. For context only, TechRadar’s US guide, last updated September 18, 2026, groups affordable phones below $500 and cheap phones at $300 or less; those are that guide’s categories, not global definitions. TechRadar’s US budget-phone guide
2. Rank the things you need the phone to do
Pick the two or three factors that matter most, then use them to judge trade-offs. A camera-focused buyer, a frequent gamer, and someone who mainly needs dependable calls and long battery life should not necessarily choose the same device. Samsung’s buying guide uses camera, gaming, battery, screen size, memory and storage, and 5G as comparison considerations. Those are useful prompts, not independent test results. Samsung UK’s phone buying guide
- Camera: Consider the kinds of photos and videos you take. If you often photograph distant subjects, check for a telephoto camera rather than assuming every multi-camera phone has one.
- Battery and charging: Look for evidence relevant to your typical day and check charging details. A large battery alone does not establish how long a phone lasts in your use.
- Performance: Match the phone to your apps and games. Everyday responsiveness and demanding gaming are different requirements.
- Screen size and comfort: Think about one-handed use, reading, video, and whether the phone fits where you carry it.
- Storage and connectivity: Compare the exact storage version and verify that the phone supports the carrier and network services you need in your region.
3. Compare actual models against your priorities
Once you have a short list, compare the same factors for each exact model and configuration. Do not treat a brand family or a broad price category as proof that a particular phone suits you.

| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Total cost | Price for the storage configuration you want, in your market and from the seller you plan to use. |
| Camera | Whether the lenses and capabilities fit your real use, such as portraits, low-light photos, or distant subjects. |
| Battery and charging | Available endurance information and the charging features that matter to you. |
| Screen and handling | Display size and whether the device is comfortable to carry and use. |
| Performance | Whether it is suited to your most demanding regular apps or games. |
| Support and ownership | Stated OS and security update duration, warranty terms, repair availability, and network compatibility. |
As one illustration of a trade-off rather than a blanket recommendation, TechRadar’s US guide lists the Google Pixel 10a as a sub-$500 example and reports seven years of major Android OS and security updates. It praises the phone’s camera capabilities and daily-use performance, while noting that it lacks a telephoto camera and is not a leading gaming-benchmark choice. Prices and availability can change by retailer and region, so confirm the current offer and configuration before deciding. TechRadar’s US budget-phone guide
4. Check software support, warranty, and repairs
Update commitments vary by manufacturer and exact model. Find the policy for the device you are considering and check what it covers; do not infer support duration from a brand name or from another model. Consumer Reports includes operating system, update support, trade-ins, and repairs among its buying considerations. Consumer Reports’ cell phone buying guide

Before purchase, verify the warranty and repair options available where you live, as well as the seller’s reputation. This matters especially for unfamiliar brands and used devices: a lower price may carry more risk if the phone fails or has damage that was not disclosed.
5. Decide whether new, refurbished, or used makes sense
An older used flagship can offer features that a new budget phone does not, but the model name alone does not tell you whether it is a sound buy. Check the exact device’s remaining software support, battery condition, physical condition, repair history, warranty, return window, and seller protections. Policies differ by seller and region. If you cannot verify the condition or get meaningful recourse, the lower price may not justify the risk.

6. Match the phone to how long you expect to keep it
Consider whether the phone’s update support, repair access, and condition fit your expected ownership period. The Associated Press reported in September 2026 that Counterpoint Research put the typical smartphone replacement cycle at four years. That is a population-level estimate, not a prediction of how long any particular phone will last or how long you should keep yours. Associated Press: caring for a phone and keeping it longer
