There is no single formula for a video game’s launch price. Publishers weigh the experience they are selling, comparable games, player expectations, regional markets, and plans for discounts; development and operating costs can also influence their decisions. Those factors help explain why prices vary—and why a new game’s launch price may not be what it costs a few years later.

What determines a game’s launch price?

Steamworks’ official pricing guidance offers a practical list of factors developers can weigh: expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access status, prices of comparable games, and planned promotions. It also emphasizes market research, the value players receive, and their expectations. These are considerations, not a formula that mechanically turns a game’s features into a price. Steamworks pricing guidance

In practice, a publisher is choosing a price for a particular product, audience, territory, and release strategy. A longer game is not automatically better value, and a higher price does not by itself establish quality or fairness. When comparing two games, consider how you expect to play them, whether you value replay or multiplayer, and how each compares with similar titles.

Why do video game prices rise?

Costs can be part of the explanation

Making and operating games can be expensive, particularly for large productions. The European Commission’s 2025 European Media Industry Outlook discusses rising AAA development and publishing costs, including efforts to meet player expectations and fund substantial launch promotion. Its examples and estimates are selected cases, not a definitive budget for every game. European Commission, European Media Industry Outlook

Costs were also the explanation Microsoft gave for one specific increase. In 2022, discussing its planned move to US$70 for major first-party releases effective in 2023, Xbox chief Phil Spencer told GameSpot: “Given our economic realities right now, something had to give in terms of us continuing to run the business with the increased cost basis that we had.” He also said the change reflected “the cost basis of building those games and ensuring we can run the business in the right way for our customers.” GameSpot’s report on Microsoft’s planned price change

That is Microsoft’s stated reasoning for that decision, not proof that development costs alone caused it or that every publisher raises prices for the same reason. Public information does not establish a universal development-cost figure or a rule linking a game’s budget directly to its launch price.

Prices reflect market and business choices, too

A publisher also has to judge what its intended audience may pay, how the game sits beside alternatives, and how its price fits later promotions and sales across regions. Steamworks’ guidance treats those as related decisions; it does not prescribe one launch price for a given genre or feature set. A price increase therefore cannot be explained from a game’s production costs alone.

Why can the same game cost different amounts by region?

A straight currency conversion is only one way to set regional prices. Steam’s pricing tools offer developers exchange-rate-only, purchasing-power-only, and multivariable conversion options. The multivariable option also takes into account local purchasing power and the expected cost of comparable entertainment. Developers retain discretion over regional prices. As a result, a regional price need not equal the converted price from another country. The amount a buyer sees can reflect local market conditions as well as currency movements, and the platform guidance does not make any one conversion method mandatory.

Why are new games often cheaper later?

Launch price is one point in a game’s longer sales life. A publisher may start at a higher price for an audience ready to buy at release, then lower the price over time to reach more players. Discounts can be part of that plan rather than evidence that the launch price was calculated incorrectly.

Capcom describes this approach in its 2025 integrated report: it generally launches games around US$60–70 and reduces prices as market value changes, sometimes to US$10 or US$5. The company says it aims to maximize sales and profit over five years, typically recovers development costs within one to two years, and continues to earn from catalog sales. Capcom also reports that catalog titles accounted for more than 70% of its annual unit sales. These figures describe Capcom’s own strategy and results, not an industry-wide norm. Waiting can make a game less expensive, but it means buying later rather than at release. In its 2025 report, Boston Consulting Group says about 65% of surveyed gamers use tactics such as waiting for discounts. That is a survey finding with a particular scope, not a rate for every player or territory. Boston Consulting Group, 2025

Have game prices actually gone up?

That depends on whether you mean the sticker price of new releases or what players pay after adjusting for inflation and discounts. BCG’s 2025 report says premium game prices have declined at an inflation-adjusted rate of about 1% per year over the past two decades. This is BCG’s analysis, not a universal price measure for every game, region, or business model. It helps explain why a familiar nominal launch price can represent a different real cost over time, while individual publishers may still announce increases.

Prices also differ by product and release approach. BCG discusses tiered pricing, release windowing, discount timing, and subscriptions as ways the industry can address different willingness to pay and preferences for access. These are approaches the report analyzes, not policies used by every publisher. A single headline price cannot capture the full range of ways players buy or access games.

What about older console games?

Historical pricing had different pressures. A 2012 Game Developer article argues that cartridge manufacturing costs helped sustain high prices in earlier console generations, while the shift to CD-ROM reduced media costs. That account is useful context for how formats can affect prices; it does not explain today’s market or establish a current average. Game Developer’s historical discussion of game prices
