For most UPI transfers, NPCI’s published ceiling is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, but certain categories have higher ceilings and your bank may set a lower limit. Fees depend on the payment route: NPCI specifically says customers pay no charge for PPI-on-UPI transactions, but that statement does not establish a universal fee rule for every UPI service.
What is the UPI transfer limit?
NPCI’s UPI FAQ states a general ceiling of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. That is the system’s published ceiling, not a promise that every bank or app will let every customer send that amount. Banks may apply lower internal limits or additional controls.
NPCI also lists higher ceilings for particular transaction categories. A later circular, dated 28 August 2025, raised ceilings for specified tax-aligned categories, but only for merchants categorized as “Verified Merchant.” The circular says member banks may set internal limits within NPCI’s overall ceilings.
| Payment category or service | NPCI-published ceiling | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| General UPI transaction | Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction | NPCI FAQ; a bank may impose a lower limit. Publication year not stated on the FAQ page. |
| Capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances | Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction | Categories listed in the NPCI FAQ. Publication year not stated on the FAQ page; bank limits may be lower. |
| IPO and Retail Direct Scheme | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | Categories listed in the NPCI FAQ. Publication year not stated on the FAQ page; bank limits may be lower. |
| Specified categories aligned to tax payments | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | NPCI circular OC 185B, dated 28 August 2025; enhanced ceiling applies to Verified Merchants, and banks retain discretion to set internal limits. |
The higher figures are category-specific—not a general ₹5 lakh limit for all UPI payments. Whether a payment qualifies depends on its category and, for the enhanced tax-aligned ceiling, the merchant’s verified status.

Are there charges for UPI payments?
NPCI’s direct customer-facing answer concerns PPI-on-UPI. It says: “There are no charges to be paid by the customer/ PPI holder for UPI transactions.” NPCI separately says customers are not charged for receiving UPI transactions from PPIs. These statements apply to the PPI context described in the NPCI FAQ; they do not establish the fee terms for every UPI payment route, app, merchant arrangement, or service.
The available NPCI sources do not set out a comprehensive current fee schedule for all ordinary bank-account UPI payments or every app and funding source. If a payment screen shows a charge, review its details and your bank or app’s current terms to identify what the charge applies to—such as the underlying payment, a separate service, or a particular funding route.

What is the UPI Cash Point withdrawal limit and fee?
UPI Cash Point is a separate service for withdrawing cash at authorized business-correspondent outlets; it is not an ordinary person-to-person or merchant payment. NPCI’s UPI Cash Point page gives a limit of ₹5,000 per transaction.
NPCI’s Cash Point FAQ says an outlet might charge a convenience fee, usually ₹5–20, with the fee structure decided by the outlet and its bank partner. Ask the outlet about any fee before completing a withdrawal.

How should I check a payment before sending it?
- Identify the funding source. Check whether you are paying from a bank account or a PPI/wallet balance; the customer-charge statement cited above is specifically about PPI-on-UPI.
- Check the payment category. Do not assume a higher ceiling applies to a routine transfer. Confirm that the purpose is one of the eligible categories and, for the 2025 tax-aligned limit, that the merchant is verified.
- Confirm your bank’s limit. Your bank’s internal cap or controls may be lower than NPCI’s category ceiling. Check with your bank or app if the amount is close to the limit or is declined.
- Review any displayed fee. Read the payment details and check current bank, app, or service terms before confirming. For a Cash Point withdrawal, ask the outlet directly about its convenience fee.
