A missing Windows 11 feature-update offer does not necessarily mean your PC is ineligible. First check your installed version, eligibility, and any compatibility hold. If the PC is eligible and the target update is appropriate, Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant is the simplest manual route on supported x86/64 devices; installation media is another option for an in-place upgrade.
Before you install: identify the update and your current version
Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter. Note the Windows edition and version shown. A feature update changes the Windows version; it is different from a monthly quality update, which you can check under Settings > Windows Update.
Check the release information for the exact version you want. Not every version is offered as an in-place upgrade to every device. For example, Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is intended for select new devices, not as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2 on existing devices. Microsoft’s September 2026 guidance for the 26H2 enablement package describes a supported path from 24H2 or 25H2 that requires the September 22, 2026 preview cumulative update or later. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information and the version-specific documentation before choosing a target.
Why Windows Update may not offer the feature update
A missing offer can mean the rollout has not reached your PC, Windows has identified a compatibility issue, or the device does not meet Windows 11’s requirements. Microsoft uses safeguard holds to stop devices affected by a known issue from being offered a feature update while the issue is addressed; the duration depends on the issue. Check Windows release health for notices that apply to your Windows version or hardware.

Check Settings > Windows Update for a message explaining that the update is not ready or is on its way. If the device is managed by an employer or school, ask the IT administrator before using a manual installer; organizational policies may control update timing.
Check whether the PC meets Windows 11 requirements
Use the eligibility information in Windows Update or Microsoft’s PC Health Check app rather than assuming that a single specification proves compatibility. Microsoft’s published minimum requirements include a 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores that appears on its approved CPU list, 4 GB of RAM, a storage device of 64 GB or larger, TPM 2.0, and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, as well as compatible graphics and display. Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 2004 or later as the starting version for an upgrade through Windows Update. Review the current Windows 11 system requirements and run the compatibility check for the complete assessment.

Choose the right installation route
| Route | Best fit | Requirements and limits | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wait for Windows Update | Your PC may be in a phased rollout or under a temporary compatibility hold. | Check Windows Update and release-health notices for the target version. | A delayed offer can be intentional; investigate a known issue before forcing the update. |
| Windows Update Assistant | An eligible PC that has not received the feature update automatically. | Available for compatible x86/64 devices; it does not run on ARM-based PCs. | Microsoft recommends waiting for the Windows Update offer when practical. Use the official Microsoft download page and heed compatibility prompts. |
| Installation media | An eligible PC where you want to upgrade from the existing Windows installation using media. | Start setup from within the current Windows installation for an in-place upgrade; a USB drive can be used to create and carry media. | Starting the PC by booting from media is a separate clean-install route, not the same as an in-place upgrade. Check eligibility first. |
Install with Windows Update Assistant
Microsoft describes the Assistant as a manual option for a device that has not received a feature update automatically. Its support page says it is for compatible x86/64 devices and does not support ARM-based PCs. Microsoft recommends waiting until Windows Update offers the upgrade, but documents the Assistant as an option before that happens.
- Open Microsoft’s official Download Windows 11 page and find the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
- Download and run the Assistant, then follow its compatibility checks and on-screen prompts. Do not use third-party download sites.
- Allow the installation to complete and restart when prompted. If the Assistant reports that the PC is incompatible, or Windows reports an issue, stop and address that notice rather than trying to bypass it.
Upgrade using Windows 11 installation media
Microsoft also documents using installation media to upgrade an existing Windows installation. For an in-place upgrade, the important distinction is to start the PC normally into its current Windows installation, attach or open the media, and run setup.exe from there. A USB flash drive is one way to create and carry the media; it is not needed for the Assistant route.

- Confirm the PC meets Windows 11 requirements and check for release-health notices relevant to the target version.
- Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page to create or obtain installation media.
- While signed in to the existing Windows installation, connect or open the media and run
setup.exe. - Follow Setup’s prompts. If you instead boot the PC from the USB drive, you are using a separate installation path; do not treat that as equivalent to an in-place upgrade.
If your PC does not meet the requirements
Do not treat bypassing Windows 11’s minimum requirements as routine troubleshooting. Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware: it may cause compatibility problems, is unsupported, and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. See Microsoft’s notice about installing Windows 11 on devices that do not meet minimum system requirements.

If the update still will not install
- A compatibility message appears: Check Windows release health for the issue and follow Microsoft’s guidance. A safeguard hold is intended to prevent a known problem, so do not work around it without resolving the cause.
- The Assistant is unavailable or will not run: Confirm that the PC is not ARM-based and that you are using Microsoft’s official download. For a managed device, contact the administrator.
- Setup says the target version is not applicable: Recheck your current version with
winverand verify the target version’s documented upgrade path and prerequisites. For 26H1 and 26H2, consult the version-specific release documentation rather than assuming a general path. - You only need monthly fixes: Use Settings > Windows Update for quality updates; a feature-update installer is not required for that task.
