A “gigabit” label does not mean your device will receive 1,000 Mbps of usable data over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi’s advertised or reported link rate is a connection’s theoretical signaling rate; actual throughput is lower because Wi-Fi shares radio airtime, operates half-duplex, and uses some airtime for protocol overhead. Ethernet is typically more consistent when both ends and the intervening network equipment support gigabit speeds.
What “gigabit” means for Wi-Fi and Ethernet
Gigabit Ethernet refers to a nominal link rate of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), or 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps). That is not necessarily the amount of application data a speed test will measure: equipment, protocol overhead, and the rest of the network path affect throughput.
Wi-Fi link rates are also nominal signaling rates, not speed-test results. The access point (AP) and client negotiate a rate based on their capabilities and current radio conditions. Cisco explains that real-world speed can be lower than the link speed in its Wi-Fi throughput testing guide.
Why Wi-Fi can be slower than wired Ethernet
Wi-Fi shares airtime
Devices on the same Wi-Fi channel take turns using the radio medium. Nearby networks and other clients can compete for airtime, so a connection that performs well in isolation may slow when the channel is busy. Cisco’s maximum-throughput assumptions include a single client and AP in an isolated environment without other channel users.

Half-duplex operation and overhead reduce throughput
Wi-Fi does not send and receive simultaneously on the same channel. Acknowledgements, beacons, management and control frames, and gaps between transmissions all consume airtime without carrying the application data measured by a speed test.
Cisco estimates that a test may deliver about 65%–70% of the data rate used in an actual Wi-Fi throughput test. In its example, an 866 Mbps client data rate corresponds to around 600 Mbps in a test. These are Cisco’s approximate technical estimate and example, not a universal Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet ratio.

The client and AP set the capability ceiling together
A Wi-Fi 6 client connected to a Wi-Fi 5 router uses the router’s Wi-Fi 5 capabilities; a newer client cannot make an older AP support a newer standard. Antenna count, spatial streams, channel width, configuration, and drivers can also limit a connection. Intel describes this fallback behavior in its Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 compatibility guidance, reviewed July 1, 2024.
Band, distance, and obstacles affect the radio link
Distance, walls, and other obstructions can weaken the signal. Interference and poor signal conditions may lead to lower connection rates or retransmissions, reducing usable throughput. Intel’s broad band overview describes 2.4 GHz as longer-range but more crowded, 5 GHz as commonly used for higher data rates, and 6 GHz as offering more spectrum for Wi-Fi 6E devices. It gives typical over-the-air maximums of up to 100 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, up to 1 Gbps on 5 GHz, and up to 2 Gbps on 6 GHz; these vendor figures are not promises of household speed-test results. Moving to 6 GHz can help only if both the AP and client support Wi-Fi 6E, local regulations allow its use, and the client is actually connected on that band. Band availability does not guarantee higher throughput, especially at distance or in challenging radio conditions.
Extenders can cost airtime
An extender that uses the same radio to receive and retransmit data has limited radio capacity and can be slower than a direct connection to the router. Intel recommends testing without an extender when diagnosing Wi-Fi performance; see its Wi-Fi connection checks.

How to compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet fairly
Use the same computer and speed-test endpoint for both tests when possible. Connect Ethernet directly to the router or AP, then test Wi-Fi close to the AP first. Run the tests under similar network load; for Wi-Fi, note the band and reported link rate. The link rate is useful context, but it is not the achieved throughput.
How to troubleshoot slow gigabit Wi-Fi
- Check the connection rates. Confirm the negotiated Ethernet link speed, the Wi-Fi band, and the Wi-Fi link rate. Treat the Wi-Fi link rate as an indicator of potential, not as the speed-test result.
- Check compatibility at both ends. Confirm the router/AP and client support the same Wi-Fi generation and relevant features. The connection uses the capabilities both devices share.
- Test near the AP. Run another speed test close to the router or AP and reduce solid obstructions between it and the client. A substantial improvement points to distance or the radio path as a factor.
- Consider channel use. Other devices and nearby networks may be competing for airtime. Intel recommends checking channel overlap; specific channel choices depend on local rules and the router’s settings, so fixed channel advice is not universal.
- Temporarily bypass the extender. Compare performance with the client connected directly to the router/AP.
- Check the client’s driver and configuration. Cisco notes that an outdated driver can affect performance. Confirm the wireless adapter is configured appropriately for the device and network.
- Change equipment only after identifying a limit. A Wi-Fi 6E upgrade requires compatible AP and client hardware, and results depend on band availability and radio conditions. A newer router cannot overcome a client’s hardware limits.
When Ethernet is the better choice
Choose Ethernet when stable throughput and latency matter more than mobility and a cable is practical. Wi-Fi is convenient for mobile devices and locations where cabling is difficult, but its performance varies with shared airtime, device capabilities, signal quality, and local conditions. Actual results depend on the equipment and network; there is no single reliable percentage by which Wi-Fi is always slower than Ethernet.
