Sometimes—but there is no blanket safety answer for humanoid robots. Risk depends on the specific robot and software version, what it is doing, where it is operating, who may come near it, and how the system is assessed, safeguarded, maintained, and supervised. Industrial collaborative-robot guidance can help, but it does not certify humanoids for public spaces or homes.

Why there is no category-wide safety answer

A humanoid robot is not safe or unsafe in isolation from its use. The same machine could present different risks when carrying a load through a restricted work area, working beside trained staff, or moving among visitors. Its tools and payload, speed, stability, possible contact with people, and behavior during a fault all matter.

It is also important to distinguish a safety feature from a safety conclusion. A person-detection system or emergency stop may help manage particular hazards, but neither proves that the whole robot application is safe for every task or person. The relevant question is whether the specific configuration has been assessed and protected for the conditions in which it will operate.

What standards and regulations do—and do not—cover

Standards can provide useful requirements and methods within their stated scope. They should not be treated as a universal approval for every humanoid deployment.

Reference What it covers What its scope does not establish
ISO/TS 15066:2016 A technical specification for collaborative industrial robot systems that supplements ISO 10218-1 and ISO 10218-2. ISO says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current. ISO says it does not apply to non-industrial robots. Its principles may be useful elsewhere, but it is not a blanket safety certification for public, consumer, or home humanoids.
ISO 10218-1:2025 An industrial robot standard. Its stated exclusions include service robots with public access, consumer products, public access by all ages or non-working adults, and lifting or transporting people. It does not certify all humanoids.
OSHA’s robotics standards page OSHA says there are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry and lists national consensus standards as guidance. Those consensus standards are not OSHA regulations. OSHA states: “These are NOT OSHA regulations. However, they do provide guidance from their originating organizations related to worker protection.”

So a vendor’s reference to a standard, or a claim that a robot is “safety certified,” needs context: which standard, which robot and configuration, which tasks and location, and what the assessment actually covered.

Assess the application, not just the robot

OSHA’s Technical Manual guidance on robotics treats risk assessment as an application-level task. Relevant factors include programmed work, start-up and programming, environmental conditions, installation, foreseeable worker errors, maintenance, malfunctions, normal operation, emergency procedures, worker duties, and hazards specific to the application. OSHA also cautions that completing an assessment alone does not establish that workers are adequately protected. Its guidance describes the integrator as responsible for completing and documenting an assessment before commissioning and recommends involving affected workers.

For a proposed deployment, ask questions such as:

  • What will the robot do? Identify each task, tool, load, and object it will handle, including transitions between tasks.
  • Who can be exposed? Include operators, maintenance staff, contractors, visitors, and members of the public—not just the person assigned to supervise the robot.
  • How does it respond to people and faults? Find out how it detects people, keeps separation, slows or stops, and behaves after a sensor fault or loss of communication.
  • Who validates and maintains the safeguards? Ask whether they were checked on the actual robot configuration and at the actual site, and who is accountable for integration, inspection, and updates.
  • Are procedures documented and current? Check operating, emergency, maintenance, and worker-training procedures, including what staff should do when something goes wrong.

These prompts help identify what a qualified, site-specific assessment needs to address; they are not a substitute for one.

What collaborative safety methods can do

Collaborative industrial robotics uses methods aimed at particular contact risks. Two approaches described by NIST illustrate why the method matters—and why its presence alone does not settle the broader safety question.

  • Safe & Durable – Made from child-safe, non-toxic materials, these stretchy robot toys are BPA-free and designed for long-lasting play.
  • Speed-and-separation monitoring: the system limits robot speed and maintains enough distance from an operator to prevent contact. NIST describes this approach in its speed-and-separation monitoring testbed.
  • Power-and-force limiting: during collaborative operation, the system limits force or pressure and triggers a protective stop if a limit is exceeded during contact. NIST’s work on measuring blunt-force impacts on humans addresses this kind of impact.

These are risk-reduction approaches, not guarantees that any robot using them is safe for every person, task, environment, or foreseeable failure. The robot’s movement, tools, payload, stability, and site conditions still need to be considered.

How to judge a humanoid robot’s safety claim

When comparing systems, look for evidence that matches the intended deployment rather than relying on a broad “safe” label.

  • Intended use and access: Is the robot meant for an industrial workcell, shared work area, public venue, or home? Are nearby people trained adults or the general public?
  • Hazards and controls: What protections address separation, contact forces, controlled stops, emergency stops, instability or falls, and tools or payloads?
  • Validation scope: Does the evidence identify the exact model and software version, tasks, site conditions, test method, assessor, and limitations?
  • Operational controls: Are risk assessment, barriers or restricted areas where needed, monitoring, incident response, maintenance, and training addressed?

These comparison dimensions follow the application focus in OSHA’s guidance and the scope boundaries in ISO’s standards. A product claim is meaningful only to the extent that its evidence covers the use case in question.

What the Digit 5 announcement does—and does not—show

On September 15, 2026, Agility Robotics announced Digit 5 with a safety architecture it described as including human detection, visual and auditory cues, and an independent safety controller. Agility said the system builds on more than 65,000 hours of operation and commercial deployments. These are manufacturer-reported claims, not an independent finding that the robot is safe in every setting.

The hours figure is operational experience, not an injury-rate statistic or independently measured safety outcome. The cited official and manufacturer material does not establish a published humanoid injury rate or comparative safety statistic. Agility’s Digit 5 product page also says some safety features remain in development and warns that safety features do not eliminate all operational risk.

Deployment history can also be version- and site-specific. In its account of earlier Digit deployments, Agility says robots operated behind physical safety barriers where motion and stability risks existed, while describing barrier-free cooperative safety as a goal for a newer generation. That is the manufacturer’s account, not an independent assessment; it underscores why claims should be checked against the exact model, configuration, and deployment.
