Not necessarily both. For an internet plan above 1 Gbps, you need a router with a suitably fast WAN connection if the router would otherwise cap the incoming service. You need a multi-gig switch only when you need additional faster wired ports that the router does not provide. Every link from the ISP handoff to the device—including the switch uplink, cable and network adapter—must support the speed you want.

Router or switch: which one do you need?

A router connects your home network to your internet provider and directs traffic between the two. A switch adds wired network ports. Neither device can make a slower link elsewhere in the path faster.

  • Consider a multi-gig router when your plan exceeds 1 Gbps and the router’s WAN port is limited to 1 Gbps, or when you need multi-gig wired connections but the router lacks suitable LAN ports.
  • Consider a multi-gig switch when the router already receives the faster service, but you need more multi-gig LAN ports for wired devices.
  • You may need neither if your plan is 1 Gbps or lower and your existing equipment meets your needs. Google Fiber’s own-router recommendations list gigabit WAN and LAN ports for its 1 Gig plan; that is provider-specific guidance, not a universal equipment rule. Google Fiber’s own-router recommendations

A switch connected to a gigabit-only router cannot make that router’s internet connection multi-gig. The switch’s uplink to the router remains a limit.

Trace the complete connection before buying

Check each link in the route a speed test will use. A single gigabit-only connection can constrain traffic to around 1 Gbps at that point, even if other equipment has faster ports.

  1. ISP service and handoff: Confirm the provisioned download and upload rates, and whether they differ. Check the speed and compatibility of the modem, ONT or provider gateway’s Ethernet output.
  2. Router WAN: The WAN port must accept the handoff’s required rate. For its own-router multi-gig recommendations, Google Fiber specifies a 10 Gbps WAN port; other providers and plans may have different requirements. Google Fiber’s own-router recommendations
  3. Router LAN and switch: Check the port serving the device, plus every switch port and uplink between it and the router. A router can have a multi-gig WAN but only gigabit LAN ports.
  4. Client interface: A wired computer needs a 2.5GbE-or-faster Ethernet port or a compatible adapter. The adapter’s USB or PCIe connection, drivers and operating system can affect whether it can use that rate.
  5. Cable: Check cable requirements for both endpoints and the run. NETGEAR says the multi-gig ports covered by its documentation can work with Cat5e and Cat6, but that does not guarantee a particular link rate on every installation. NETGEAR’s multi-gig Ethernet explanation

Choose equipment for the bottleneck you actually have

Plan above 1 Gbps, but the WAN path is gigabit-only

Look for the specific limit between the ISP handoff and router. If the provider’s modem or gateway offers only a gigabit output, replacing the router alone will not solve that limit. If the handoff is fast enough but the router WAN is gigabit-only, a router with a compatible faster WAN port may be needed. Confirm the provider’s requirements before choosing equipment.

Fast WAN, but gigabit LAN ports

The router may receive more than 1 Gbps while a device plugged into a gigabit LAN port remains limited by that port. Choose a router with an appropriate multi-gig LAN port, or connect a multi-gig switch to a suitable router port. The switch’s uplink must also carry the intended traffic rate.

Several wired devices need faster links

Count the multi-gig ports available on the router and compare that with the number of devices that need them. Add a switch if you need more ports, and check both its per-port rates and its uplink. For its 2 Gig service, Google Fiber says a switch capable of 2 Gbps or greater is needed to get the maximum speed available from its router and adapter. This is guidance for that provider’s setup, not a universal switch requirement. Google Fiber: Getting the most out of 2 Gig

Only Wi-Fi devices need the speed

A faster wired plan does not guarantee a Wi-Fi client will test above 1 Gbps. The client’s radio capability, distance, interference and router configuration all matter; a Wi-Fi generation label or advertised aggregate rate is not an individual-device speed guarantee. As one provider-specific example, Google Fiber says its included Wi-Fi 6 router and mesh extender for 2 Gig can deliver wireless speeds up to 700 Mbps. That figure applies to the stated Google Fiber equipment and setup, not to Wi-Fi generally. Google Fiber: Getting the most out of 2 Gig

One computer is the only target

Before buying a switch, check the computer’s Ethernet port or compatible adapter. If it has no multi-gig interface, a faster router port alone will not give that computer a faster wired link. Diagnose a speed result before replacing equipment

  1. Verify the plan’s actual provisioned download and upload rates rather than relying only on its marketing name.
  2. Check the negotiated Ethernet link speed at the modem or gateway output and router WAN.
  3. Check the router LAN port, switch ports and uplinks along the path to the test device.
  4. Check the computer’s negotiated link speed and adapter specifications, including USB connection and driver support if applicable.
  5. Test over Ethernet when possible to separate wired-network limits from Wi-Fi conditions. Google Fiber notes that a direct Ethernet connection can be faster and more stable than Wi-Fi. Google Fiber: Getting the most out of 2 Gig
  6. If the entire wired path supports multi-gig but a browser test still appears capped, consider whether the test device or software is the limit. Google Fiber’s 8 Gig testing instructions specify using a desktop speed-test client for its 8 Gig testing workflow. Google Fiber 8 Gig instructions

Quick decision table

Situation What to check or add
Plan is 1 Gbps or lower; current setup is adequate A multi-gig upgrade may not provide a useful improvement. Google Fiber lists gigabit WAN and LAN for its 1 Gig own-router recommendation. Source
Plan exceeds 1 Gbps; router WAN is gigabit-only Verify the provider handoff, then consider a compatible multi-gig WAN router.
Router has multi-gig WAN but gigabit LAN Use a faster LAN port or a multi-gig switch connected by a suitable uplink.
More wired devices need multi-gig links than the router has ports Add a multi-gig switch with suitable per-port rates and uplink.
Wi-Fi client is not reaching the plan rate Assess client capability, distance, interference and router configuration before assuming a switch is needed.
One wired computer is the only device of concern Check its Ethernet port or adapter and the interface’s connection to the computer before buying more network ports.
