Yes. Flashlights, camera flashes and close contact can disturb nesting sea turtles or hatchlings. On a nesting beach after dark, keep lights off, do not touch or approach turtles, and follow local wildlife guidance. The exact rules and viewing distances vary by location.
How lights can affect nesting turtles
Artificial light can disorient adult turtles and hatchlings. A nesting female may turn away or make a false crawl; hatchlings can be led inland or away from the ocean. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service advises: “Avoid shining bright lights near sea turtles or on beaches after dusk”. Bright white flashlights are not the only concern. Cell phone screens, vehicle and building lights, and beach fires can also add light to a nesting beach. Keep screens dim or off and avoid using any light near turtles unless local instructions specifically require it.
Do not use flash photography near turtles
Florida wildlife officials advise against flashlights, flash photography and video equipment around nesting turtles and hatchlings. A flash is a sudden burst of light, so do not assume a camera is acceptable simply because you are standing still or using a long lens. NOAA’s general guidance allows photography or filming of sea turtles when people follow viewing distances and do not disturb the animals; that is not permission to use flash where nesting-beach guidance prohibits it.

Researchers have studied flash photography and green turtle nesting behavior at Tortuguero, Costa Rica, but the available NOAA proceedings material does not establish a universal, quantified effect. The practical advice remains clear: do not use flash near nesting turtles.
Why touching or getting close is harmful
Do not touch, feed, chase, surround or block a turtle’s route between the beach and the ocean. A person’s presence or movement can frighten or disorient a turtle. Florida officials warn that a disturbed female may return to the ocean before nesting is complete. Keep hands and equipment away from the animal, eggs and hatchlings.

There is no single viewing distance that applies everywhere. For example, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance in Alabama recommends at least 30 feet, while Hawaiʻi guidance recommends more than 10 feet for honu. Florida’s encounter advice says to stay out of the turtle’s way without specifying a distance in the cited text. These are location-specific recommendations, not interchangeable universal rules. Follow posted signs and local wildlife officials, or the directions of an authorized guide.
What to do if you see a turtle at night
- Turn off lights and flash. Switch off flashlights, camera flash, video lights and phone screens near the turtle.
- Stay quiet and give it room. Do not approach, touch, chase or surround the animal, and do not block its path to or from the water.
- Follow local instructions. Respect beach closures, signs, distance rules and any trained guide’s directions. Organized sea turtle walks are one way to view turtles while helping protect turtles, nests and hatchlings.
- Report animals in trouble. Contact the local wildlife authority if you see an injured or dead turtle or hatchlings moving in the wrong direction.
Is a red or amber flashlight safe to use?
Not automatically. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service suggests finding a flashlight that emits long-wavelength red or amber light, or using a red filter over a regular flashlight, as an alternative to bright white light. The same guidance emphasizes turning lights out near a turtle and keeping your distance. A colored light is not permission to shine a beam at wildlife; darkness and non-disturbance come first. Check local rules before bringing or using any light.
