Quit Teams, open the cache folder Microsoft documents at %appdata%MicrosoftTeams, delete the folder’s contents, then reopen Teams and sign in. This does not uninstall the app, but Microsoft says it removes local cached material, including local message history and display images.
Clear the Teams cache in Windows
- Quit Teams: Find the Microsoft Teams icon in the Windows taskbar, right-click it, and select Quit. Microsoft says this forces the app to close.
- Open the documented cache folder: Open File Explorer, paste
%appdata%MicrosoftTeamsinto the address bar, and press Enter. - Delete the folder’s contents: Delete the contents of the folder, rather than uninstalling Teams.
- Restart and sign in: Open Microsoft Teams again and sign in.

What clearing the cache removes
Microsoft says the cache includes web-client cache, icons, thumbnails, local message history, Teams display images, and other Teams add-ons. Deleting it does not remove the Teams app. The support article does not specify which local items are restored from the service or guarantee how a particular user’s state will resync, so do not assume that every locally cached item will return.
If the folder is missing or the steps do not match
The cited Microsoft procedure documents this path, but does not say it applies to every current Teams app generation or every Windows installation. If the folder is absent or your app behaves differently, do not substitute an unverified folder path; check your organization’s IT guidance or contact Microsoft support.

Other connection troubleshooting options
Microsoft also lists several possible steps for connection or reconnection problems. They are alternatives to try, not guaranteed fixes:
- Check that your internet connection is working.
- Sign out of Teams and sign back in.
- If you use a VPN, try toggling it.
- Try the web version of Teams.
- Reinstall Teams.
