RCS is the internet-based messaging mode in Google Messages that can add typing indicators, read receipts, richer media sharing, and group controls. It works only when the people in a conversation, their messaging apps, devices, carriers, and region support it. If they do not, Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS, which has different features and is not end-to-end encrypted.
What RCS means in Google Messages
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. In Google Messages, it is a richer alternative to SMS and MMS that sends messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google lists typing indicators, read receipts, and file and high-resolution photo sharing among its RCS chat features. SMS and MMS are carrier messaging services; RCS requires compatible support on both sides of the conversation.
RCS over Wi-Fi does not use mobile data, though a Wi-Fi connection may have its own charges. RCS sent over mobile data uses the allowance in your plan. See Google’s RCS chats by Google FAQ for its description of data use and availability.

RCS is not a universal guarantee of a particular feature set. Google says availability varies by region and carrier, and the experience can also depend on the app and device used by participants. Google’s compatibility FAQ describes the limitations for Android-to-iPhone conversations.

Does RCS work between Android and iPhone?
Google’s current FAQ says supported RCS chats between Android and iPhone can include typing indicators and read receipts in one-to-one conversations, group chat management, and high-resolution photos and videos. Availability depends on region and carrier, so the presence of an iPhone does not by itself establish that RCS will work. Check RCS status in Google Messages and consult your carrier for local support.
Google’s FAQ also says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted. Do not assume that cross-platform RCS has the same security properties as an eligible RCS chat between Google Messages users.

How to check whether a conversation is using RCS
- Open the conversation in Google Messages. Look at the message composer: Google says “RCS message” indicates RCS, while “Text message” indicates a message sent by the carrier as SMS or MMS. Google’s RCS security help explains the visible message-mode label.
- Check RCS status in the app. In Google Messages, open your profile menu, choose Messages settings, then RCS chats. Check the displayed status; labels or placement may vary by app version.
- Check who is in the conversation. Everyone must have RCS available and enabled for the conversation to use RCS. In a group, a participant without RCS can mean the group uses SMS/MMS instead.
Why a message may send as SMS or MMS instead
Common reasons include an unsupported carrier or region, RCS being turned off for you or another participant, a temporary connection problem, or a recipient whose messaging app or device does not support the feature. Google Messages can continue a conversation using SMS/MMS when RCS is unavailable. If delivery fails, it may keep trying RCS delivery or offer a switch to SMS/MMS; Google’s message delivery guidance describes those options.
Checks when RCS will not turn on
- Set Google Messages as the default SMS app.
- Confirm that the phone has internet access and can receive SMS.
- Review RCS status in Google Messages settings, including whether the carrier has disabled RCS.
- Ask your carrier whether RCS is supported for your device and region.

RCS encryption: what is and is not protected
Google says end-to-end encryption applies to eligible RCS chats when both participants use Google Messages, have RCS enabled, and communicate over Wi-Fi or mobile data. In that case, messages and attachments are encrypted between devices. It does not apply to SMS/MMS, to RCS conversations using an app without that feature, or to RCS chats with iPhone users, according to Google’s end-to-end encryption explanation.
Google states that its RCS service uses TLS when end-to-end encryption is unavailable. Its RCS security and privacy page says Google uses a phone number, device identifiers, and SIM-card number to deliver messages and maintain a connection; it may store this information for about a month to support connection continuity and temporary offline periods. This describes Google’s RCS service, not every carrier’s implementation.

Because delivery can switch to SMS/MMS, a conversation that was using encrypted RCS may not remain end-to-end encrypted after fallback. Check the visible message mode rather than treating the conversation or an RCS label as a blanket encryption guarantee.

Google Messages offers two photo and video sending options. HD Optimized for chat sends media faster and uses less data; HD+ Original quality sends it at full media resolution. Carrier MMS compression can affect image quality, so media sent after falling back to MMS may not match the RCS experience. Google’s media-sharing help describes these options.

Business RCS is different from a personal chat
Google’s business-messaging documentation describes verified business identities and interactive content, but business conversations have different privacy boundaries. Google says verified business chats are not end-to-end encrypted; businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers may manage or access content for delivery and other purposes.
