A brief black screen or flicker exactly as a film or show starts can be a normal part of automatic frame-rate switching: the streaming device changes its video output mode and the TV resynchronizes. If the picture does not return, the signal drops repeatedly, or black screens happen outside a mode change, troubleshoot the device and HDMI chain instead. Matching can reduce judder, but turning it off may avoid some transitions at the cost of less even motion.
Why frame-rate matching can cause a black screen
Films and shows are produced at different frame rates. When a streaming device matches its output refresh rate to the content, it may switch the video mode sent over HDMI. The television then has to recognize and lock onto the new signal. That change can briefly blank or flicker the picture.
Apple warns that users might see a blank screen or flickering as a television switches formats in its Match Dynamic Range or Match Frame Rate guidance. Android’s documentation says some devices can show a black screen for a second or two during refresh-rate switching in its frame-rate guide. Apple Developer likewise notes that televisions respond differently and that a mode change can flash or temporarily black out the screen for a few seconds (AVDisplayManager). These are vendor descriptions of possible interruptions, not guaranteed durations.
A short blank synchronized with playback starting or a format change is different from a picture that stays black or repeatedly loses signal. The former may be expected resynchronization; the latter needs diagnosis.

Why disabling matching can increase judder
Frame-rate matching lets content display at its original or corresponding cadence. If the device instead converts content to a different output refresh rate, frames may not be distributed evenly. Android explains that matching can avoid conversion artifacts such as 3:2 pulldown judder (Android frame-rate guidance; Android TV judder guidance).
There is a practical tradeoff: matching may mean a brief display transition when content changes, while a fixed output mode may keep transitions less noticeable but make motion look uneven on some content. The result depends on the source device, app, TV, and supported formats; neither setting is best for every setup.

Choose between matching and a fixed refresh mode
| Setting | Potential benefit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Enable frame-rate matching | Content can display at its original or corresponding cadence, reducing conversion judder. | The TV may briefly blank or flicker while switching modes. |
| Disable frame-rate matching | Avoids some mode changes and may keep the interface at a steady output mode. | Frame-rate conversion can cause judder; results vary with the TV and content. |
| Use Quick Media Switching, if supported | Can reduce delays when switching frame rates on compatible equipment. | It is not universal; Apple says it works best when the switching formats use the same chroma. |
| Set a fixed refresh mode | May suit a setup that values consistent output and handles conversion acceptably. | A mode that does not match the content can cause judder or slow apps designed for another refresh rate. |
If original motion cadence matters most and a brief transition is acceptable, try leaving matching enabled. If seamless switching or a steady interface matters more, try disabling it and compare motion on the content you watch. Judge both the picture and how the interface behaves.
Check whether your device and app support matching
Similar settings have different names and are not available on every device or app. Apple calls its Apple TV option “Match Frame Rate.” Google documents “Match content frame rate” for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer; menu availability can depend on the software. A device-level setting does not prove that every app will use matching.

On NVIDIA SHIELD TV, NVIDIA says Plex and Kodi support automatic refresh-rate matching. It also cautions that selecting a refresh rate other than 60Hz can slow activities designed for 60Hz, including the home page, games, and 60Hz video (SHIELD TV refresh-rate guidance).
Troubleshoot a black screen or repeated signal loss
- Check when the blank happens. If it occurs briefly as playback begins or content changes, it may be the display resynchronizing. If the screen remains black or loses signal at unrelated times, continue through the checks below.
- Verify the app and device setting. Confirm that the exact streaming device and app support matching, then check the device’s own display settings. Do not assume one menu path applies across models or software versions.
- Test matching both on and off. Change the setting and replay the same scene. Note whether blackouts stop and whether motion becomes less smooth; this helps establish which tradeoff fits your setup.
- Check resolution and the HDMI path. Review the source device’s output resolution and supported format settings, then check the HDMI ports and connections. If an AV receiver or HDMI switch sits between the streamer and TV, test with a simpler connection where practical.
- Check power and signal stability. Confirm that the source, receiver or switch, and TV are powered and that connections are secure. Apple includes resolution, HDMI setup, and power among its Apple TV black-screen troubleshooting steps. A cable replacement is not a proven cure for ordinary mode-switch blanking; consider a compatible, certified HDMI cable only if symptoms suggest an unstable signal.
- Check Quick Media Switching where available. On a compatible Apple TV setup, see whether the option is supported. Apple notes that it works best when switching formats use the same chroma (Apple TV format-matching guidance).
SHIELD TV: account for app and interface behavior
If you use SHIELD, distinguish playback from the home screen and other 60Hz-oriented activities. Plex and Kodi can request matching, but a fixed output mode below 60Hz may make apps or interface elements designed for 60Hz feel slower. Check the SHIELD display mode and compare behavior in the affected app rather than treating every change in responsiveness as a TV signal fault.
