If AirPods show as connected but you hear sound from your Mac speakers—or hear nothing—first select AirPods as the Mac’s audio output. A Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee that macOS is routing sound to them. Then check app volume, Bluetooth and charge, and reconnect only if the AirPods are missing or unavailable.

1. Select AirPods as your Mac’s sound output

  1. Click Control Center in the menu bar.
  2. Choose Sound, then select your AirPods as the output device.
  3. Play audio again.

Alternatively, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select AirPods. Apple recommends this step when sound continues to come from Mac speakers. Apple’s Mac setup instructions and the Mac User Guide describe choosing a Bluetooth device for sound output.

2. Check volume and mute in the app

  • Check the player’s volume and mute control. A browser tab, meeting app, or media player may have its own audio setting.
  • Try a different app or audio file. If only one source is silent, the issue may be its playback settings rather than the AirPods connection.
  • Check Mac volume and confirm the intended device remains selected under System Settings > Sound > Output.

3. Confirm AirPods are available to connect

If AirPods are not listed as an output or will not connect, check that Bluetooth is on and both AirPods are charging. Put both in their case, wear them, then check the sound destination list in Control Center.

If they remain unavailable, pair them manually. Apple’s model-specific pairing controls can change, so use the steps for your generation on its current setup page.

Pair AirPods manually

  1. On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Put both AirPods in the case and open the lid.
  3. Enter pairing mode for your model. Apple’s US instructions say AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods 5 use a double-tap on the front of the case until the light flashes white; other listed models use the setup button on the back until the light flashes white.
  4. Under Nearby Devices, choose Connect beside AirPods.

Those instructions and compatibility details are model- and software-dependent; check Apple’s live page for your exact AirPods generation.

4. Reconnect before considering a reset

When pairing still fails, Apple’s reconnection guidance recommends updating macOS, checking that Bluetooth is on and both AirPods are charging, and testing the selected audio destination. Then put both AirPods in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, reopen it, and pair manually. If they still will not connect, follow Apple’s reset procedure for the exact model; reset controls differ between generations. See Apple’s AirPods connection troubleshooting steps.

To limit automatic switching, open System Settings > Bluetooth, click the options button beside AirPods, and set Connect to This Mac to When Last Connected to This Mac. Availability and labels can depend on the AirPods model and macOS version. See Apple’s instructions for switching AirPods between devices.

6. If audio is muffled or quieter during calls

Reduced quality or volume during a meeting is different from sound being routed to the wrong output. When an app uses the AirPods microphone, Bluetooth switches to a speaking-and-listening mode that can lower audio quality and volume. Close apps using the AirPods microphone, then select the headphones again as the output. Apple explains this behavior in its guide to reduced Bluetooth headphone sound quality on Mac.

7. Troubleshoot Mac speakers only if they also fail

If the Mac’s internal speakers are silent even when selected, investigate that separately: check app volume, disconnect external audio devices and displays, choose the built-in speakers in System Settings > Sound, and confirm volume is raised and mute is off. Apple says persistent internal-speaker problems may require service; they do not by themselves show that AirPods need replacement. See Apple’s internal-speaker troubleshooting guide.
