You can often improve the Wi-Fi speed a device actually gets without changing your internet plan—but first find out whether the slowdown is in your home’s wireless network or in the broadband connection itself. Compare a speed test near the router with one in the problem room, and, if possible, test a computer over Ethernet. If Ethernet is also slow, Wi-Fi tweaks are unlikely to fix the underlying limit.

First, find out where the slowdown is

Wi-Fi speed is not the same as your internet plan’s speed. Your plan sets an upper limit on the broadband connection entering the home; the speed on a particular device also depends on its wireless link, distance from the router, walls and other obstacles, device capabilities, and how many people are using the network.

  1. Run a speed test on the device and connection you normally use. Record the time, device, room, and whether it is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Repeat the test close to the router, then in the room where service feels slow. Keep the test device and method the same where practical.
  3. If possible, connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and run another test. Repeat any surprising result rather than making a decision based on one reading.

If the wired result is good but Wi-Fi is slow, focus on wireless coverage, band choice, and household demand. If wired and wireless results are both poor, check the modem, router, service, or ISP connection before buying Wi-Fi equipment. Linksys explains this wired-versus-wireless diagnostic in its slow Wi-Fi or internet speed guidance. Microsoft also recommends taking a baseline before making changes in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Move the router to a better location

A router tucked away for convenience may be poorly placed for radio coverage. Put it in an open, central spot, above floor level, rather than inside a cabinet, closet, drawer, or behind furniture. Keep it clear of walls and solid obstacles as much as the room allows. Google Fiber notes that materials such as concrete, cinder block, wood, and drywall can weaken or block Wi-Fi signals in its Wi-Fi speed guidance.

  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Change one thing at a time and retest from the room that matters. A better location may improve coverage without costing anything, but it cannot fix a slow broadband connection or guarantee strong signal in every room.

Choose the right Wi-Fi band for each device

If your router and device support both bands, use 5 GHz for nearby laptops, TVs, or consoles that need throughput. It is often faster and less affected by neighboring Wi-Fi, but its signal covers less distance and passes through obstacles less effectively. The FCC summarizes the trade-off: “Routers that use a 5 GHz connection are faster, but their signal covers a shorter range than 2.4 GHz bands.”

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Consider 2.4 GHz for devices farther away, separated by more walls, or with older wireless support. It generally reaches farther and works with a broader range of older and IoT devices, though it may be more crowded. Available bands and the way devices select them depend on the router and client; settings and labels differ, so use your equipment’s instructions rather than assuming a universal menu path. See the FCC’s consumer Wi-Fi guidance and Microsoft’s home-layout guidance for the band trade-offs.

Use Ethernet for devices that stay put

For a desktop, streaming TV, or game console near the router, a direct Ethernet cable can avoid wireless contention and provide a steadier connection. The FCC says a direct cable can provide the highest speeds available to that device while alleviating Wi-Fi congestion. It does not raise the broadband plan’s speed ceiling, and the actual result remains bounded by the service, modem, router, ports, and device.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

If a laptop or other device has no Ethernet port, a USB Ethernet adapter may work; check that the adapter and device ports support the speeds you need. A wired connection is most useful for a stationary device where consistency matters, not as a way to make the internet service itself faster.

Reduce competition during demanding tasks

Several high-demand activities at once—such as video calls, VPN work, graphics-intensive gaming, streaming, and large downloads—can bog down even a recent router. Pause or schedule large downloads when a call or other time-sensitive task needs a stable connection, and coordinate heavy use when possible. The FCC recommends managing and prioritizing household usage. If the connection remains slow even when demand is light and a wired test is poor, the bottleneck may be outside Wi-Fi.

Add coverage equipment only when coverage is the problem

An extender or mesh system can help when the diagnosis points to weak coverage, but neither increases the broadband connection’s performance or plan limit. For one isolated weak spot, an extender may be enough. For multiple rooms or a larger, multi-floor home, mesh may provide broader coverage. Ofcom explains this distinction in its Wi-Fi experience guidance.

Placement matters: a wireless extender or mesh node needs to receive a usable signal from the router to relay it effectively. Google Fiber recommends placing a wireless mesh extender about halfway between the router and the farthest area needing coverage, while ensuring the extender itself still has an excellent connection. A node placed deep inside a dead zone may only repeat a weak signal. If your system supports wired backhaul, follow its placement guidance because a wired link can change where nodes can be placed.

Which fix fits the problem?

Option Best fit Trade-off or limit
Router relocation Weak signal linked to placement or obstacles Free, but may not reach every room or fix an ISP-side limit
5 GHz Nearby supported devices that need throughput Shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration than 2.4 GHz
Ethernet cable Stationary device near the router; consistency or Wi-Fi congestion concern Tethered and bounded by device, router, and service capacity
USB Ethernet adapter Device without an Ethernet port Compatibility and port capability vary
Wi-Fi range extender One limited weak-coverage area Must be placed where it receives a usable signal; does not increase plan speed
Mesh Wi-Fi system Multiple weak areas or a larger, multi-floor layout Costs more; placement and backhaul quality matter

When Wi-Fi changes will not help

If wired tests are consistently slow as well as Wi-Fi tests, or your connection is slow even close to the router when household demand is low, the wireless link may not be the limiting factor. Check the modem and router connections, confirm the service is working as expected, and contact your ISP if the broadband connection remains below what you normally receive. No placement change, band switch, cable, extender, or mesh node can deliver beyond the capacity of the broadband service and equipment path.
