There is no universal device limit for gigabit internet. Verizon estimates that its Fios Gigabit tier supports up to 50 devices, but that is a service-specific planning figure—not a guarantee that 50 devices can all use high speeds at the same time. The practical limit depends on what those devices are doing, your router and Wi-Fi conditions, and each device’s capabilities.
What “supports” means: connected devices versus active use
A device can be connected to Wi-Fi while using very little bandwidth. A home with many mostly idle smart-home devices and a few active streams or video calls puts a different load on the connection from a home where many devices are downloading, uploading, gaming, or streaming at once.
All devices using the internet share the throughput available at the service address. CenturyLink says its Fiber Gigabit service provides up to 940 Mbps over a wired connection and that connected devices share that throughput. That figure describes the service disclosure, not a promise that every device will receive 940 Mbps. CenturyLink Fiber service disclosure.
What provider and router device counts actually tell you
Verizon’s 50-device estimate
Verizon says its Fios Gigabit tier “Supports up to 50 devices.” Its support page also lists average wired download speeds of 750–940 Mbps and upload speeds of 750–880 Mbps. These are Verizon’s figures for its service; they are not an independent test or a universal gigabit standard. Verizon notes that actual wired and wireless speeds vary with device limitations, multiple users, network conditions, and other factors. Verizon Fios Gigabit support.

A router’s connection limit is a different number
Router manufacturers may state how many clients a router can connect to a Wi-Fi band. TP-Link lists up to 128 connections on 5 GHz and 96 on 2.4 GHz for its Archer AX4400. Those are router connection-capacity claims, not evidence that all those devices can simultaneously receive gigabit speeds. TP-Link says actual speed also depends on the Ethernet port, client device, ISP, and environment. TP-Link Archer AX4400 product page.
| Figure | What it applies to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 devices | Verizon’s Fios Gigabit tier | A universal maximum or guaranteed performance for 50 heavily active devices |
| Up to 940 Mbps wired | CenturyLink Fiber Gigabit service disclosure | The speed each connected device will receive |
| Up to 128 on 5 GHz; up to 96 on 2.4 GHz | TP-Link Archer AX4400 router connection-capacity claims | Simultaneous gigabit internet throughput for that many clients |
Why Wi-Fi can be slower than a gigabit plan
Your internet plan is only one part of the path between a device and the internet. The router’s capabilities, the device’s wireless hardware, distance, walls, interference, and the number of active clients can all affect Wi-Fi performance. A fast wired connection to the router does not guarantee the same speed over Wi-Fi.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther but processes data less quickly than 5 GHz. Nearby Wi-Fi networks can affect performance, and multiple wireless devices sharing a network can lead to lag or slower responses. FCC broadband speed guide.

How to check whether the bottleneck is your plan, router, or Wi-Fi
- Check the connection where the router receives service. If possible, compare a wired speed test with the speed you expect from your plan. Provider figures can vary by connection type and conditions.
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi results. If wired performance is substantially better, focus on wireless coverage, interference, router capability, or the client device rather than assuming the internet plan lacks capacity.
- Check router port rates. For gigabit service, Google Fiber’s guidance for customers choosing their own router calls for Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) WAN and LAN ports. A slower port can constrain a wired link. Google Fiber router requirements.
- Check the Wi-Fi standard and coverage. Google Fiber recommends at least Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), preferring Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, for its service context. Its guidance also notes that distance and interference affect Wi-Fi and that even the fastest router delivers slower Wi-Fi speeds than wired speeds.
- Consider when the slowdown occurs. If performance drops mainly when several people are streaming, uploading, gaming, or on calls, shared throughput or Wi-Fi airtime may be the issue. If it drops only in distant rooms, coverage is a more likely concern.
Choose a fix for the actual constraint
- Not enough wired ports: Add a gigabit Ethernet switch if you need more wired connections. Google Fiber says its Network Box allows no more than four direct Ethernet connections and recommends a gigabit switch for additional wired devices; that four-device limit applies to that specific hardware, not all routers. Google Fiber Network Box FAQ.
- Weak Wi-Fi in some areas: Improve access-point placement or consider additional access points or mesh coverage if the problem is reach. More broadband speed alone will not fix a weak signal.
- Slow wireless performance throughout the home: Check the router’s Wi-Fi capability, port rates, interference, and client device limits before replacing equipment. A newer router is useful only if the current one is the constraint.
- Slowdowns during heavy simultaneous use: Identify which activities are consuming capacity and whether uploads or downloads are the pinch point. More devices connected is not by itself proof that the plan is undersized.
