You can photograph wild sea turtles without approaching them: stay at the distance recommended for your location and use camera zoom or binoculars to see more detail. NOAA Fisheries’ general U.S. guidance recommends at least 50 yards; its Hawaiʻi guidance recommends at least 10 feet (3 meters). These are different, location-specific recommendations, not interchangeable universal rules. Check posted instructions and local requirements before taking pictures.
How far away should you stay?
Start with the rule for the place where you are viewing the turtle. NOAA Fisheries gives a general recommendation of at least 50 yards from sea turtles on land or in the water. For Hawaiʻi, NOAA recommends at least 10 feet (3 meters), on land and in the water. Follow any stricter site-specific direction or local rule.
These are agency recommendations with different geographic scopes, not a single distance that applies everywhere. Check the rules for the beach, park, marine protected area, or tour location. How to get a closer-looking photo from a respectful distance
Use zoom instead of moving closer
Frame the image with your camera’s zoom, or observe with binoculars. NOAA’s Hawaiʻi guidance puts it plainly: “Use binoculars or your camera’s zoom for a close up.” A telephoto lens can help you compose from farther away, but it is not a reason to reduce the distance. Let the turtle set the pace
Do not follow, chase, touch, feed, ride, or try to provoke a reaction for a more dramatic picture. If a turtle swims toward you, stay calm, give it room to pass, and withdraw without pursuing it. Avoid selfies or staged interactions that require getting close. NOAA warns that disturbance can cause a nesting turtle to abandon her attempt.
Photographing turtles from a boat
Keep the applicable viewing distance and move slowly and predictably. NOAA’s vessel guidance says to use no-wake speed, avoid chasing, encircling, or trapping a turtle, and let it pass. Photographing a nesting turtle at night
Keep back and do not crowd or block the turtle. Avoid visible light on the nesting beach: turn lights off, shield them, or redirect them away from the beach. NOAA says artificial light can disorient hatchlings and discourage nesting females from coming ashore. Respect beach closures and local nesting-season instructions. NOAA says people or pets disturbing a nesting turtle may cause her to abandon the nesting attempt and return to the water. NOAA also states that all sea turtles found in the United States are listed under the Endangered Species Act and that harassment or harm is prohibited.
