There is no platform or online community that can be called universally safe for every middle schooler. The best way to choose one is to evaluate the specific group together: who can contact your child, how moderation works, what privacy and reporting controls are available, and how your child can leave or ask for help.
Start with your child’s interests, then inspect the specific community
Ask what your child wants from an online space—playing a game, sharing art, learning about science or sports, talking about a fandom, or working on homework. A community connected to a known activity or organization may be a more manageable place to start than a large, open discovery space, but that alone does not establish that it is well moderated.
Before joining, look at the actual server, group, game experience, or community together. A platform’s safety page describes platform-level tools; it does not prove that every individual space has active or effective moderators.
- Rules and purpose: Are the rules clear, and do they explain what behavior is not allowed?
- People in charge: Can you identify who runs the space and whether moderators appear active?
- Reporting and blocking: Can your child report a specific post or user, and block or mute someone?
- Membership: Is the group invitation-only or open to anyone? Who can invite your child?
Check who can contact your child—and how
Content ratings are only part of the decision. Map the ways people can interact: public chat, group messages, direct messages, voice, invitations, and links that lead to other services. Ask which features your child actually needs and whether contact can be limited to known or trusted people.

Age-based account settings can change what communication is available. For example, Roblox describes different chat access and parental controls for its Kids and Select accounts. Minecraft’s parent-managed settings include whether people outside a child’s friends list can communicate by voice, text, or invitations. Check the settings on your own child’s account rather than assuming defaults apply to every age, account, or region.
Compare candidate communities with the same questions

The OECD’s 2025 review of 50 online services describes a varied mix of communication restrictions, content filters, age ratings, parental controls, and privacy measures. It is a non-exhaustive selection, not a ranking of communities or evidence that a particular service is safe for your child. Read the OECD report.

Set privacy rules and an easy exit plan
Agree on what your child should keep private from people they do not know offline. Minecraft’s safety guidance specifically warns about details such as a name, age, city, or school; the same principle applies when using other services.
- Do not share a full name, school, city, routine, location, personal images, or contact details with people your child does not know offline.
- Do not move a conversation with a stranger to another service.
- Tell a trusted adult if someone asks for location details, photos, or off-platform contact.
Make it clear that your child can pause, leave, block, or report someone and tell you what happened without being blamed or automatically losing access as punishment. Practice finding the relevant controls before there is a problem. Minecraft advises parents to reassure children that they did nothing wrong if a conversation makes them uncomfortable and to block the user.

Configure controls together and revisit them
Use the controls that fit the particular account and community, then check them again when your child changes devices, account age category, game edition, server, or platform. Features and defaults can vary and change over time.
Minecraft
Minecraft describes parent-managed account settings for multiplayer access, clubs, adding friends, and whether people outside a child’s friends list can communicate by voice, text, or invitations. Its controls page says child accounts are under 16 in the US and EU and under 19 in South Korea, and that only parent accounts can change these settings. Check the current account settings and eligibility details on Minecraft’s parental controls page.

In Java Edition 1.19.1, Minecraft added player reporting for inappropriate chat or dangerous behavior on multiplayer servers, including private servers. The report flow can include surrounding chat context. Minecraft says safety features began being added in version 1.16.4; it does not provide parental controls for earlier versions or modded versions. For chat and social features, Minecraft Help also directs families to Microsoft family-group settings and says some communication channels are monitored by automated systems and some are moderated. That is not a claim that every communication channel or server receives the same human moderation. Discord
Discord describes servers as spaces for interests or friend groups, organized into topic-based channels. Its Parent Hub says the vast majority of servers are small and invitation-only, and links families to Family Center, moderation information, and reporting guidance. These platform descriptions do not establish that a particular server has effective moderators or suits a particular middle schooler. Evaluate the server itself and check the child’s age eligibility and Discord’s current terms before recommending it. See Discord’s Parent Hub.

Roblox
Roblox describes Kids accounts for ages 5–8 and Select accounts for ages 9–15. According to its Safety Center, chat is off by default for Kids accounts, though parents can enable some in-game chat; chat outside games is disabled. Select accounts have age-related communication rules and parental controls. Roblox also describes maturity-rating restrictions, creator verification, and ongoing review of experiences available to these account types. These are platform-reported policies and tools, not a guarantee that a child will never encounter inappropriate material. Review the family account’s current settings and use its reporting and blocking tools through Roblox’s Safety Center.
In an announcement dated May 20, 2026, Roblox said Kids and Select accounts were beginning to roll out in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, with a global rollout planned to begin in early June. Availability and account behavior can vary; confirm what is currently available in your own account rather than relying on that schedule. See Roblox’s rollout announcement.
