If you received a notice—or suspect your employee information may have been exposed—first verify the message through your district’s official website or a known HR contact. Then use the notice to identify exactly what information was involved and follow the response that matches it. If a Social Security number was exposed, consider free credit freezes with all three credit bureaus; if you see signs of identity theft, report them at IdentityTheft.gov.
Verify the notice and identify what was exposed
- Confirm the message is genuine. Don’t follow an unexpected email or text link or call the number in it until you have confirmed it independently. Use contact details on the district’s official website or a known HR contact.
- Read the notice closely. Note what information was involved, when it was exposed, what the district says it has done, and how to reach the district. Check whether the notice offers credit monitoring or identity-restoration support, who is eligible, how to enroll, and any deadline or service period. Keep a copy of the notice.
- Match your response to the information listed. Look for references to a Social Security number, bank or payroll details, tax information, health or benefits records, credit-card details, or login credentials. Don’t assume that every type of information was exposed.
The FTC says breach notices should explain what is known about the incident, what information was involved, what steps have been taken, what protection is offered, and how to contact the organization. The exact requirements vary by state and incident. FTC: Data Breach Response—A Guide for Business.
Choose steps based on the exposed information

Consider a credit freeze if your Social Security number was exposed
A freeze restricts potential creditors from accessing your credit report, making it harder for someone to open new credit accounts in your name. It is free to place and lift and does not affect your credit score, according to the FTC. You must request it separately from all three bureaus:

You can temporarily lift a freeze when a lender needs access to your report. A fraud alert is another free option: it asks lenders to take extra steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. For an initial alert, you can contact one bureau, which must notify the other two. A freeze is more restrictive for new-credit applications; an alert flags your file but does not block access. Neither tool prevents every kind of misuse of exposed employee information. See the FTC’s credit-freeze guidance and freeze-versus-alert comparison.
Use district-offered support and monitor for warning signs
If the notice offers free credit monitoring or identity restoration, check its eligibility rules, enrollment instructions, deadline, duration, and precise services before signing up. Don’t assume support is available: the FTC suggests organizations consider offering at least a year of free monitoring or other assistance, especially when Social Security numbers or financial details are exposed, but that is guidance to organizations—not a guarantee that your district must provide it.

Review credit reports for accounts and inquiries you don’t recognize, and check bank and card statements for unfamiliar transactions. If health or benefits information was involved, look for claims or bills you cannot explain. Save the notice and records of calls, disputes, and suspicious activity. Report suspected identity theft and follow the recovery steps
If you find an account, inquiry, transaction, or other activity you believe is fraudulent, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. The site can create a recovery plan and provide steps based on your situation. Contact the affected bank, card issuer, insurer, or service provider through a trusted channel as appropriate, and keep copies of reports and correspondence.

Be cautious about follow-up requests
Information exposed in a breach can make an impersonation attempt more convincing. Before giving additional personal or financial information, verify the request with the district or financial institution using a contact method you already trust—not the details in an unexpected message.
