To switch AirPods, select them on the device you want to listen to: on iPhone or iPad, use the AirPods or AirPlay control in Now Playing, on the Lock Screen, or in Control Center; on Mac, choose them from the Bluetooth menu in the menu bar. Supported AirPods can also switch automatically between compatible Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Switch AirPods manually
Keep your AirPods in your ears and near the device you want to use. Then choose them from that device’s audio controls.
On iPhone or iPad
- Start audio or open an audio control in Now Playing, on the Lock Screen, or in Control Center.
- Tap the AirPods or AirPlay icon.
- Select your AirPods from the list.
On Mac
- Click the Bluetooth status menu in the menu bar.
- Select your AirPods.

How automatic switching works
With supported AirPods and compatible software, audio can move to the Apple device you are using when your devices are signed in to the same Apple Account. For example, audio may move from music playing on a Mac to a podcast started on an iPhone; an incoming call can also move audio to the iPhone. The exact eligibility depends on the AirPods model and software setup. Apple’s AirPods setup requirements specify that the same Apple Account must have two-factor authentication enabled and list operating-system requirements by model.

Return AirPods to an iPhone or iPad or stop automatic switching
Return after an automatic switch
If AirPods move away from an iPhone or iPad, Apple documents a “Moved to” notice with a control to return the connection. Tap that control to switch back.
Prefer the last-connected device
On the device where you want to limit automatic switching, connect the AirPods and open their settings. Under “Connect to This [device],” choose “When Last Connected.” Apple provides instructions for iPhone or iPad and Mac in its switching guide.

If AirPods do not appear on your Mac
- On your Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in their case and open the lid.
- Use the case control for your AirPods model to enter pairing mode. The required action differs between newer and other models, so follow Apple’s instructions for your model rather than assuming every case uses the same button.
- On the Mac, find the AirPods under Nearby Devices and click Connect.
