In the United States, rideshare drivers using a personal vehicle should keep personal auto insurance in force, tell their insurer about their transportation network company (TNC) driving, and confirm in writing what coverage applies during every app and trip phase. An ordinary personal auto policy may exclude paid rideshare use, while a platform policy may not cover the driver’s own car or injuries in every situation. The right policy depends on your state, platform, vehicle, and whether you transport passengers or make deliveries.
Why a personal auto policy may not be enough
Personal auto insurance is generally written for personal use. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says most personal auto policies continue to exclude livery or commercial use, and state guidance also warns of exclusions. Do not assume your policy covers paid rideshare driving just because you have the legally required personal insurance. Tell your insurer what you do and ask how the actual policy treats it. NAIC guidance on commercial ride-sharing and North Carolina Department of Insurance guidance explain why this matters.
Rideshare coverage is not one uniform nationwide policy. Your personal policy, any rideshare endorsement or hybrid policy, the platform’s current insurance certificate, and state law can all affect which policy responds to a loss. Coverage may also differ between passenger trips and delivery work.
Check insurance at each stage of a trip
Coverage can change as you move from personal driving to app availability and then to an accepted or active trip. Verify each stage rather than relying on a general statement that you are “covered.”

| Offline; app not in use | Your personal policy applies according to its terms. Keep the required personal auto insurance active. Uber’s insurance guidance describes its coverage by trip circumstance. |
| App on; waiting for a request | This is a commonly identified gap period. Ask whether the platform provides liability coverage and whether your personal policy or endorsement covers your own vehicle, injuries, and other protections. The NAIC specifically flags the period when a driver is logged in but has not accepted a request. NAIC guidance. |
| Request accepted; driving to pickup | Review the platform’s current state certificate and your personal policy together. Vehicle damage coverage may depend on your own comprehensive and collision coverage. Uber’s insurance guidance. |
| Passenger in vehicle or prearranged ride | Confirm the applicable TNC liability limits, plus whether collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM), and medical payments or personal injury protection (PIP) coverages apply to you and your vehicle. State requirements vary. California Department of Insurance guidance. |
Liability coverage and protection for your own losses are different questions. A platform’s liability insurance does not necessarily pay to repair your car or cover your injuries. Uber says vehicle repair coverage while en route to a trip or during a trip depends on the driver’s own comprehensive and collision coverage. Check the platform’s current certificate for your state and circumstances rather than assuming a platform-wide description applies to you.
Compare the policy options that fit your work
Ask your insurer whether your existing policy permits paid rideshare driving and whether you need an endorsement, a hybrid policy, or commercial insurance. Compare the options against your actual work and the protections you want; names and terms can differ by insurer and state.

| Coverage option | When to ask about it | Key points to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Personal auto policy with a rideshare endorsement | You use a personal vehicle for TNC work and your insurer offers an endorsement for your location and policy. | Which app phases it covers; whether it applies to each platform and delivery work; and how it addresses liability, physical damage, UM/UIM, medical payments or PIP, and deductibles. State Farm describes an endorsement extending specified personal-auto coverage while logged in and waiting, but terms and availability require confirmation. State Farm’s rideshare coverage explanation. |
| Hybrid personal-commercial auto policy | You need a policy designed to address personal driving and TNC use, including periods that might otherwise leave a gap. | Confirm the exact phases, coverages, limits, primary or excess status, and deductibles in the policy. Do not assume “hybrid” means every platform, delivery activity, or loss is covered. |
| Commercial livery insurance | You use a black car, limousine, commercially licensed for-hire vehicle, or other livery vehicle. | Ask what commercial auto policy your vehicle and work require. A personal-auto rideshare endorsement may not fit: State Farm excludes black-car/livery service from the described endorsement. State Farm and Uber. |
A rideshare endorsement or hybrid policy may address gaps, but no label alone establishes what is covered. Read the policy wording and confirm how it coordinates with the TNC policy, especially for damage to your vehicle and your own injuries.

- Does my personal policy permit paid rideshare driving, or must I add an endorsement or change policy type?
- Does that coverage apply to each phase, including app-on waiting before I accept a request?
- Does it cover every platform I use, and does it separately cover delivery work?
- For each phase, what liability, collision, comprehensive, UM/UIM, medical payments, or PIP coverage applies to me and my vehicle?
- What deductibles apply, and does my personal policy help with any deductible under the TNC policy?
- For the phase and type of loss I am asking about, is the platform’s coverage primary or excess?
- If I use a commercially licensed vehicle, black car, limousine, or other livery vehicle, what commercial auto policy is required?
These questions reflect distinctions highlighted by the NAIC, state insurance guidance, platform materials, and insurer explanations. A verbal assurance is not a substitute for checking the applicable policy and certificate.

Texas
Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954 provides that insurance maintained by or for a TNC driver must allow compensated use of a personal vehicle and cover the driver while logged on or engaged in a prearranged ride. The cited amendments took effect September 1, 2025. This describes Texas law, not the requirements in other states. Texas Insurance Code Chapter 1954.
California
The California Department of Insurance says the state’s TNC liability requirements do not require medical payments, comprehensive, collision, UM/UIM, or other optional coverage. Its notice describes a $1 million liability insurance requirement for TNCs approved by the California Public Utilities Commission; that figure is California-specific and does not mean the listed optional coverages are included. The notice identifies possible gaps involving driver injuries, vehicle damage, and uninsured or underinsured motorists. California Department of Insurance notice to TNC drivers.

Platform and insurer terms
Uber says its maintained insurance varies by state and trip circumstances, and directs drivers to current state certificates. State Farm describes an endorsement that extends specified personal-auto coverage while logged in and waiting, but excludes black-car/livery service. These are examples of terms to check, not promises about every driver’s policy or location. Uber; State Farm.
Make the coverage decision before driving
- Tell your insurer about the work. Specify passenger rides, delivery work, the platforms you use, and the vehicle involved.
- Map your coverage by trip phase. Check offline, app-on waiting, accepted/en route, and passenger-in-car periods for liability, your vehicle, and your own injuries.
- Compare the policy and TNC certificate. Confirm limits, primary or excess status, covered losses, exclusions, and deductibles using current documents for your state.
- Choose the appropriate policy type. Ask about a rideshare endorsement or hybrid policy for personal-vehicle TNC work; ask about commercial livery insurance if you use a for-hire vehicle.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the policy endorsement or declarations, written insurer explanation, and platform certificate so you can verify what was in force.
