You can send coding-agent prompts from Discord on your phone by connecting a Discord bot to an agent running on a computer that can access your project. The phone is the chat and control surface; the host computer runs the agent, reads and edits files, and executes commands. Community projects such as codex-discord document this kind of setup for Codex CLI.
How the phone-to-agent workflow works
The setup has three parts: the Discord mobile app, a bot or bridge that relays messages, and a host machine with the coding agent and project checkout. You send instructions in a Discord channel; the bridge passes them to the agent on the host and returns its responses. File access and command execution happen on that host, not on your phone.
This is a pattern demonstrated by community integrations, not a feature you should assume is built into every coding agent. For example, codex-discord connects Discord channels to local project folders, while discord-coding-agent describes running Codex CLI on a Raspberry Pi. The latter identifies itself as an independent community project, not an official OpenAI or Discord product.
What you need for the documented codex-discord setup
- A host computer running Node.js 20 or newer and Codex CLI.
- Codex logged in locally on that same host.
- A Discord application and bot, with Message Content Intent enabled and installation using the
botandapplications.commandsscopes. - The bot token, Discord server ID, allowed user IDs, and project-root configuration.
These are the requirements documented by codex-discord; follow its current setup guide because project instructions and compatibility can change. Its normal local-login workflow says a manually supplied OpenAI API key is not required.

#1 Best Overall
- A REAL PHYSICAL KEYBOARD, NOT AN APP: Hardware keys with genuine travel and spacing, built into the phone — not a touchscreen overlay and not a downloaded T9 app that double-types and lags. Thumb out a full message without looking at the screen.
- UNLOCKED 4G LTE FOR VERIZON, AT&T AND T-MOBILE — NAMED, NOT IMPLIED: Bring your own SIM from any of the three major US networks or their prepaid brands and keep your number. Dual SIM runs a work line and a personal line side by side on one device. No carrier contract, no activation lock.
- ABOUT 48 HOURS ON A CHARGE: Two days of real use between charges, because there is no feed running down the battery in the background. Dual-band Wi-Fi, USB-C fast charging, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, expandable to 128GB with a microSD card.
- MODULAR — SWAP THE PART, NOT THE PHONE: The keypad lifts out and swaps between full QWERTY and T9 numeric. So does the camera module, between 13MP and 20MP. Change your mind about how you type, or upgrade the camera, without buying another phone — the reason this costs more than a disposable handset and lasts longer than one.
- BUILT FROM SCRATCH TO PROTECT YOUR FOCUS: This is not a smartphone with features stripped out — it was designed from the ground up for people who want to be reachable without being pulled in. Gorilla Glass front, tough enough for real pockets.
Set it up and send a prompt
- Prepare the host. Install Node.js 20+ and Codex CLI on the computer that will run the bridge, then log in to Codex on that computer.
- Create and configure the Discord bot. Create a Discord application and bot, enable Message Content Intent, and invite it with the
botandapplications.commandsscopes. - Restrict and configure access. Add the bot token, server ID, allowed user IDs, and project-root settings to the project’s local environment file. Keep the token secret; do not paste it into a Discord message or share it with other users.
- Start the bridge. Use the launcher for your host’s operating system, then register a Discord channel to the project directory you want the agent to work in.
- Work from your phone. Open that channel in the Discord mobile app and send a prompt. The documented bridge can present approval controls for edits and command execution, and includes session, status, stop, and queue controls.
The sequence reflects the project’s documented instructions; it is not a claim that the setup has been independently installed or tested here.
Choose where the agent runs
The host needs access to the repository and must be online when you want to reach it. codex-discord documents launchers for macOS, Linux, and Windows, so an existing computer may be enough. You can instead use a dedicated always-on Raspberry Pi: discord-coding-agent describes this arrangement, with repository reads, edits, and commands on the Pi and model inference remote.

| Host choice | What the documented setup establishes | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Existing macOS, Linux, or Windows computer | codex-discord documents launchers for these platforms. | Useful if the computer already has the project and can stay online while you use the bot. |
| Raspberry Pi | discord-coding-agent documents an always-on Pi host; it does not establish a required model, memory size, or hardware benchmark. | Can serve as a dedicated host, but you will need to maintain it and keep it connected. |
Choose based on the machine you already have, whether it can remain online, how you want to maintain it, and where you want project files and agent credentials to reside. The documented Pi workflow says it needs internet access and valid Codex authentication. It uses Discord’s outbound Gateway and says its design does not require a public server, webhook, tunnel, or port forwarding. These details describe that project’s design, not every Discord bridge.

A Discord bridge can turn a chat message into file changes or shell commands on the host. Configure it as a route to a real development environment, not as a harmless chat bot.

MIL-STD-810H compliant, it is built to military standards to shrug off shocks, vibrations, and temperature extremes.
- Limit who can invoke it. Use an allowed-user list where the project supports one, and avoid placing the bot in channels where unintended users can prompt it.
- Protect the token. Treat the Discord bot token like a password. If it is exposed, revoke or rotate it using Discord’s application controls.
- Limit project access. The codex-discord project documents a
BASE_PROJECT_DIRboundary, project-path validation, and rate limiting. Check how the bridge you choose enforces directory boundaries. - Understand approvals. Find out which edits or commands require approval, who can approve them, and what the agent’s sandbox and approval policy permit. The discord-coding-agent setup guide recommends reviewing Codex’s sandbox and approval policy before using the bridge in shared channels.
- Know what stopping does. A stop control can halt an active task, but the codex-discord documentation warns that stopping does not undo edits or external effects already made.
The discord-coding-agent guide says its default workflow does not need the Discord Administrator or Manage Channels permissions. Permission requirements vary by implementation, so grant only what your chosen project’s instructions require.

What to check if it does not respond
- The bot sees commands but not ordinary text: confirm Message Content Intent is enabled if the bridge depends on message text.
- The bot cannot reach the project: check that the channel is registered to the intended project directory and that the configured project-root boundary allows that path.
- The agent cannot start: verify that Codex CLI is installed and logged in on the host, and that the bridge’s documented runtime requirements are met.
- The bot is offline: check that the host and bridge process are running and have internet access. A phone cannot reach a host that is shut down or disconnected.
- Setup differs from the guide: consult the chosen repository’s latest setup and security instructions; community projects can change their supported versions and configuration.
