PlayStation Plus is the natural fit if you play on PS4 or PS5 and want Sony’s monthly games and catalog. For either service, the best choice depends on your hardware and which games you want to play now.
Quick comparison: what each service offers
The table shows monthly prices displayed on the US official storefronts accessed October 4, 2026. Xbox game counts are vendor-advertised figures, not a guaranteed count of games available on every device or in every region. Prices and offerings can change.
| Service and tier | US monthly price | Library and notable benefits |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Essential | $10.99 | Monthly games, online multiplayer and core benefits; no Extra Game Catalog access is stated. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | $16.99 | Essential benefits, plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | $19.99 | Extra benefits, plus the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog. |
| Xbox Game Pass Essential | $9.99 | 50+ advertised games, online console multiplayer and in-game benefits; no day-one new releases. |
| Xbox Game Pass Premium | $14.99 | 200+ advertised games, online multiplayer and select Xbox-published games added within one year of launch. |
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99 | 500+ advertised games across console, PC and supported devices; day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | 300+ advertised PC games, day-one titles and EA Play; PC-only. |
PlayStation lists three- and twelve-month durations as well as monthly rates on its US page. Xbox’s game counts and both companies’ displayed prices are current storefront descriptions, not stable measures of a library’s size or value. Check the live terms for your region before subscribing.
Which service suits your platform and play style?
Choose PlayStation Plus if you play on PS4 or PS5
PlayStation Plus is the straightforward match for a PlayStation owner who wants access to Sony’s monthly game selection or a broader catalog on the same console. Essential includes monthly games and online multiplayer. Extra is the tier that adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds classics, trials and streaming features.

Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for console, PC and day-one access
Ultimate is the broad Xbox option if you want a subscription spanning Xbox console, PC and supported devices, as well as day-one releases. Xbox also offers PC Game Pass for someone who only needs PC access and does not need the console benefits of Ultimate.
Compare entry-level plans carefully
PlayStation Plus Essential and Xbox Game Pass Essential are lower-cost options with online multiplayer, but they are not equivalent to the services’ catalog tiers. Essential on PlayStation provides monthly games, while Xbox Essential advertises a 50+ game library and does not include day-one new releases. If a rotating catalog is your priority, compare the higher tiers that actually include one.

Which PlayStation Plus tier includes the Game Catalog?
PlayStation Plus Extra includes the Game Catalog. Premium includes Extra benefits and adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming. Essential provides monthly games and core benefits but does not include the Extra Game Catalog.
Premium is worth considering over Extra only if its additional features—classics, trials or streaming—matter to you. Most catalog titles can be downloaded; classic PS3 games are streaming-only. Premium supports streaming for eligible catalog games.

Do you keep games when you cancel?
No: subscription catalog access is not permanent ownership. PlayStation says Essential members can play the monthly selection while their membership is active. Extra and Premium catalog titles can leave the service, and Sony may list end dates for departing games. Xbox says access continues until the subscription expires or a game leaves the Game Pass library. Its official FAQ puts it plainly: “Game Pass subscribers enjoy access to games in the library until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.”
If you want long-term access to a specific game, check whether you can buy it from the relevant store and whether it is currently included in your plan. Both catalogs can change, so check for announced leaving dates before starting a game you expect to keep playing.

- PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
How to choose based on the games you actually want
- Check your hardware. Confirm that your console or PC is supported by the particular plan; Xbox notes that availability varies by plan, region and platform.
- Look up your priority titles in both live catalogs. Verify that each game is available in your region, on your device and at the tier you are considering.
- Compare the right tiers. For a PlayStation catalog, compare Extra and Premium. For Xbox day-one games and console-plus-PC coverage, look at Ultimate; for PC-only play, compare PC Game Pass.
- Account for how long you want access. A catalog listing is not a purchase. If you want to keep a particular game available after it leaves or your membership ends, check its purchase option.
- Choose the lowest tier that covers your needs. Do not pay for streaming, classics, PC access or other benefits unless you expect to use them.
What the advertised library counts can—and cannot—tell you
Xbox advertises 50+ games for Essential, 200+ for Premium, 500+ for Ultimate and 300+ for PC Game Pass on its US page. These are Xbox’s current plan descriptions, not an independent audit or a promise that every listed game is playable on every supported device. Xbox says titles, counts, features and availability vary by time, region, plan and platform.
A larger headline count does not establish that a service has more of the games you care about, nor does it resolve which plan is better for your household. Catalogs rotate, and the available set depends on your plan and device. Search the live catalog for your must-play games before deciding.
