To move crypto safely, generate a receive address for the exact asset in your hardware wallet’s official software, verify that address on the device itself, and withdraw the same asset over a network supported by both the exchange and wallet. For a large transfer, send the exchange’s minimum withdrawal first and confirm it arrives before sending more.

Before you withdraw: confirm the asset and network

Check that your wallet supports both the specific cryptocurrency and the network you intend to use. The exchange’s asset name and a familiar-looking address are not enough to establish compatibility. The withdrawal network must match the wallet’s supported network; sending over an unsupported or mismatched network can result in lost funds. Binance explains the network-selection risk in its withdrawal guide.

Use the wallet maker’s official companion software and setup instructions. If the wallet is new, complete setup and create its recovery backup before transferring funds. Trezor advises storing the backup offline and not photographing it or typing it into a phone or computer: Trezor wallet backup guidance.

Generate and verify a receive address

  1. Open the official wallet software and unlock or connect the hardware wallet.
  2. Select the account for the asset you plan to receive, then choose Receive.
  3. Display the full address and check it on the physical device. Compare the address shown in the software with the one displayed on the hardware wallet screen. The device check helps you catch an address altered by a compromised computer or phone. Trezor and Ledger both describe this verification step in their instructions: Trezor’s receiving guide and Ledger’s Bitcoin receiving guide.
  4. Copy or scan only the verified public address. A transfer requires the public receive address, not your recovery phrase or backup. Never enter recovery credentials on an exchange site, in a support chat, by email, or into an ordinary computer form.

Enter the withdrawal on the exchange

  1. Open the exchange’s withdrawal or send flow and select the same cryptocurrency you chose in the wallet.
  2. Choose a network supported by both the exchange withdrawal and the destination wallet. Some assets are available on more than one network; matching the ticker or address format alone does not prove compatibility.
  3. Paste or scan the address you just verified on the hardware device. Check the complete address rather than relying on its first and last characters. Avoid copying an old destination from transaction history: lookalike or address-poisoning scams can put a similar address there. Trezor covers this risk in its address-poisoning guidance.
  4. Enter any required memo or tag for the selected asset and network. The exchange’s current withdrawal instructions will indicate when one is needed.
  5. Review the asset, network, full destination address, amount, fee, estimated amount to arrive, and any memo or tag before confirming. Binance notes that its withdrawal flow displays the fee and final amount; the exact details vary by asset and network.

Send a test transfer before moving a large amount

For a substantial withdrawal, send the minimum amount the exchange permits and wait until it appears in the receiving wallet. If the test arrives in the expected account, submit the remainder to the same verified destination. Trezor recommends this test-first approach for exchange withdrawals in its exchange-to-Trezor guide and transfer guidance.

A successful test confirms that the first withdrawal reached the intended wallet; it does not verify the details of any later withdrawal. Recheck the address, asset, network, and any required identifier each time.

Track the transfer and check fees

Keep the exchange’s withdrawal record and transaction ID (TXID). Use the exchange’s official status page and, when useful, the relevant blockchain explorer to check progress and confirmations. Confirmation time depends on the blockchain and current network traffic, so there is no reliable universal arrival estimate. If a withdrawal is pending, check its status before considering any further action; do not send a duplicate just because it has not appeared yet.

Before confirming, use the exchange withdrawal screen to check the current fee, minimum, selected network, and amount expected to arrive. Fees and timing vary with the exchange, asset, network, and traffic; no single fee or arrival time applies to every transfer. Network fees also apply to crypto transfers, as described in Trezor’s transfer guide.

If the exchange asks you to prove wallet ownership

Some exchanges may request evidence that a destination is a self-hosted wallet, depending on the transaction and local rules. Coinbase documents two methods in particular cases: signing a message for some ERC-20 assets, or sending a small deposit from the wallet to a Coinbase-generated address for other networks. The deposit method can incur network fees and requires sending the exact amount Coinbase requests. These are Coinbase procedures, not a universal requirement for every exchange or user: see Coinbase’s self-hosted wallet guidance.

Common mistakes that can derail a transfer

  • Choosing the wrong network: verify support on both sides for the exact asset and wallet setup. Similar address formats, including some EVM-style formats, do not establish that a particular wallet account supports the transfer.
  • Pairing the wrong asset and address: do not send one cryptocurrency to an address intended for another. Trezor gives Bitcoin Cash sent to a Bitcoin address as an example in its receiving instructions; Ledger warns about sending non-Bitcoin assets to a Bitcoin address in its Bitcoin guide.
  • Trusting a clipboard or old address without checking: verify the full address on the hardware device for the current transfer, especially if it was copied or scanned.
  • Skipping a test for a large amount: send the exchange minimum first and wait for it to arrive before transferring the remainder.
  • Sharing the recovery backup: the exchange needs the public receive address, never the recovery phrase or backup.
  • Leaving out a required memo or tag: check the exchange’s instructions for the selected asset and network before confirming.

Choosing a hardware wallet for exchange withdrawals

Do not choose a wallet based on brand or address appearance alone. Compare whether it supports the exact asset and network you need, lets you verify receive addresses on the device screen, provides clear setup and backup instructions, and works with your operating system and preferred companion software. Purchase cost and availability can change, so check the manufacturer’s current information. These are practical comparison criteria, not a ranking or claim that one device has been independently tested here.
