If your Social Security number (SSN) was exposed in a school district or vendor data breach, start with the notice and the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov/databreach checklist. Review your credit reports, consider a free credit freeze or fraud alert, and use any breach-response services the notice offers. An exposed SSN does not prove that anyone has misused it, but these steps can help you spot and respond to misuse early.
Start with the breach notice, then verify the district contact
Keep the notice and check what information it says was exposed, the period covered, how to contact the district or its vendor, and whether free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance is offered. The FTC recommends using free services provided after a breach when they are available; check the notice for eligibility, duration, covered bureaus, and terms. Not every breach includes these services.
If the notice arrived unexpectedly or asks you to provide sensitive information, do not rely on its links or phone number until you verify them. Contact your district’s HR, privacy, or information-security office using a phone number or address you already know, such as one in the employee directory. Ask what the notice confirms, whether a vendor is involved, what services are available, and where to send relevant follow-up evidence. Do not send your full SSN in response to an unsolicited call, text, or email; the FTC cautions that organizations that legitimately need an SSN should not unexpectedly contact people to request it.
Use the official breach-response checklist
Go to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach and follow the steps for your situation. The FTC recommends ordering and reviewing your credit reports after an SSN exposure, and checking for accounts or activity you do not recognize. You can also use IdentityTheft.gov to report suspected identity theft and receive a recovery plan tailored to the problem.

Choose a credit freeze, fraud alert, or breach-provided monitoring
A freeze and a fraud alert are different safeguards. The FTC says both are free. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit while it is in place; it does not affect your credit score and remains until you lift it. You need to contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. Temporarily lift the freeze when a lender needs access to your report.

An initial fraud alert asks lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit. You can request one from a single nationwide bureau, which must notify the other two. An alert does not block access to your report in the way a freeze does.
| Option | What it does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report for opening new credit while the freeze is in place. | Free and does not affect your credit score. Contact all three nationwide bureaus; lift the freeze when a lender needs access. FTC details. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit. | Free. Contact one bureau; it must notify the other two. It does not block report access like a freeze. FTC details. |
| Breach-provided monitoring or identity-theft insurance | Provides services offered by the organization responsible for the breach. | Availability and terms depend on the notice. Check eligibility, duration, covered bureaus, and coverage details. FTC guidance. |

Take additional steps for tax, work, or unemployment fraud
If tax information or employment income looks wrong
A rejected tax return, an IRS notice about multiple returns, or income reported by an unfamiliar employer can indicate tax identity theft. Report suspected misuse through IdentityTheft.gov, follow its recovery plan, and consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN. If you suspect someone used your SSN for employment, review your Social Security work history and contact the Social Security Administration about errors. The FTC also describes locking an SSN through myE-Verify as an option. See the FTC’s tax identity-theft guidance and its instructions for responding to suspected tax-return misuse.

If paper records still contain personal information, shred them before disposal. Shredding helps protect the information on those documents; it does not undo an SSN exposure or replace credit and account monitoring. The FTC includes safe disposal of records among its identity-theft precautions.

What the breach does—and does not—tell you
An exposed SSN is a reason to take protective steps, not proof that someone has already committed fraud. District-specific benefits, notification details, and legal duties depend on the actual incident, employer, and location. Use the notice and a verified district contact for information about your case rather than assuming one set of services or rules applies everywhere.
