A public DC fast charger’s advertised kilowatts describe the power it can supply under suitable conditions—not what every connected car will receive throughout a stop. The EV’s own charging limit, battery charge level and temperature, and the station’s current output all affect the rate. Because charging power usually tapers as the battery fills, a brief peak is not the same as the speed you should expect for an entire session.

What the charger’s advertised kW actually means

The charger and the vehicle have separate power limits. The station rating is a ceiling on what the equipment can provide; the car’s DC fast-charging acceptance limit is a ceiling on what it can take. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes public DC fast chargers as generally advertising 50–350 kW in the United States, but that range is not a promise that a particular vehicle will receive the dispenser’s full rating (EPA: Plug-in Electric Vehicle Charging: The Details).

For example, Chevrolet says a vehicle with a 150 kW acceptance rate connected to a 350 kW station charges at up to 150 kW, not 350 kW. A higher-rated charger cannot make the car accept power beyond its own limit (Chevrolet: DC Fast Charging Station | Quick Start Guide). Compare the station rating with the maximum DC charging rate specified for your particular EV, not just with the largest number on the dispenser.

Why the rate changes during a stop

Charge level: power tapers as the battery fills

An EV battery does not accept one fixed power level from nearly empty to full. Charging is generally faster at a lower state of charge and slows as the battery approaches full. The exact curve varies by vehicle, so a rate seen early in a session may fall later without indicating a fault (EPA: Watt’s Important? Seven Tips Every EV Driver Should Know!).

  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

For road-trip planning, around 80% is a useful point to reconsider whether you need to keep charging, not a universal cutoff. EPA guidance says charging beyond roughly 80% tends to be significantly slower and can sometimes double the time required to reach 100%; the Department of Energy also notes that many batteries reduce charging power in the 80–100% range (EPA: Plug-in Electric Vehicle Charging: The Basics; DOE: Winterizing Your Electric Vehicle). If you need the extra range, charging past that point is an option—just allow for the slower final portion.

Battery temperature: cold or heat can limit acceptance

Very cold or hot battery conditions can slow fast charging. Some EVs can precondition the battery—heating or cooling it toward a suitable temperature—when you route to a DC fast charger using the vehicle’s built-in navigation. Not every model supports this feature, and it does not guarantee a specific charging rate. Check the owner’s manual or vehicle settings for your model’s instructions (EPA: Watt’s Important? Seven Tips Every EV Driver Should Know!).

When the station itself may be limiting power

A headline rating may describe peak rather than continuous output, and a site’s available power can also be affected by how it shares capacity among neighboring chargers. NREL’s 2024 report, Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging, gives the ABB Terra HP as an example: it is rated at 350 kW peak and 320 kW continuous. The report also notes that EVs reach maximum charging power for only a short portion of a session. These are specific examples, not a claim that every network shares power in the same way (NREL: Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging).

That is why a brief peak reading, a lower reading later, and the average power over a whole stop are different measurements. A lower observed rate can reflect the vehicle’s ceiling, battery charge level or temperature, or the station’s output and operating conditions. Without details such as the EV model, state of charge, battery temperature, dispenser and site conditions, the displayed rate alone cannot establish that a charger is defective.

What to check if your EV charges more slowly than expected

  1. Check the car’s limit. Look up the vehicle’s maximum DC fast-charging acceptance rate in its official specifications or owner’s manual, then compare it with the dispenser rating.
  2. Consider the starting charge level. When practical on a road trip, arriving with a lower state of charge can help you spend more of the stop in the faster part of the charging curve. Expect the rate to taper as the battery fills.
  3. Check for supported preconditioning. In extreme temperatures, use the vehicle’s navigation to route to the charger if your EV supports battery preconditioning. Follow the model-specific guidance in its manual or settings.
  4. Decide whether you need to charge past about 80%. Stop there if it provides enough range for the next leg; continue higher when the trip requires it, accounting for slower charging near full.
  5. Consider site conditions before blaming the dispenser. The number on the charger does not show the EV’s live acceptance limit, battery condition, or how the site is operating. DOE and National Laboratory of the Rockies profile work identifies factors including state of charge, battery temperature, vehicle condition, smart charge management and EVSE limitations as relevant to charging behavior (DOE/National Laboratory of the Rockies: EVs@Scale Next-Gen Profiles – EV Profile Capture 2024).

The EPA puts the distinction plainly: “That’s the maximum power that a charger can provide but it doesn’t mean your EV can accept that much power.” (EPA: Watt’s Important? Seven Tips Every EV Driver Should Know!)
