An older flagship processor can outperform a newer, lower-tier chip in some tasks—but tier names and release dates alone are poor buying guides. Compare the exact phones and the workloads you care about, including sustained performance, heat, software support, price, and condition. One 2026 comparison of two Motorola foldables illustrates why the answer can change between CPU, graphics, and AI tests.
First, identify which chips you are comparing
“Older flagship” and “newer midrange” are broad labels, not performance guarantees. The example here compares the Snapdragon 8 Elite in the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in the Motorola Razr Fold. Qualcomm describes the 8 Gen 5 as a premium-tier platform, so this is specifically an older Elite chip versus a newer base-tier chip—not evidence that every newer midrange processor compares the same way. Qualcomm’s announcement also gives manufacturer-reported performance claims; keep those separate from independent phone tests.
For a purchase decision, start with the exact regional phone model, not just the chip name. Qualcomm’s device finder lists smartphones associated with its platforms, but a platform name by itself does not establish a phone’s features or real-world speed.
What the Razr comparison found
Android Central’s Brady Snyder tested the Razr Ultra 2026 and Razr Fold in 2026. The results show different winners depending on the test; they describe those two phones and test conditions, not the market as a whole. Read the hands-on comparison.

| Test | Razr Ultra 2026 Snapdragon 8 Elite |
Razr Fold Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 |
What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core average | 2,791 points | 2,593 points | The older Elite phone led in this test. |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core average | 8,268 points | 8,559 points | The newer 8 Gen 5 phone led on average; its best run was 8,809. |
| 3DMark Wild Life Extreme average | 5,404 points; 32.36 FPS | 4,181 points; 25.04 FPS | The older Elite phone scored higher, but its result declined under repeated load. |
| Geekbench AI quantized average | 3,245 points | 3,932 points | The newer 8 Gen 5 phone led in this AI test. |
| Wild Life Extreme stress-test stability | Did not complete; overheated and stopped after a few minutes | 56.5% stability | The newer-chip phone completed the test; the older-chip phone could not sustain it. |
These figures are Android Central’s measurements for the named phones, not universal rankings of the processors. Snyder’s conclusion was that “whether a phone has an Elite chip or not shouldn’t factor highly into your purchasing decision,” in the context of this Razr comparison.
Why the winner changes by workload
Everyday responsiveness and CPU work
The Elite-based Razr Ultra led the single-core average, while the 8 Gen 5-based Razr Fold led the multi-core average. Single-core and multi-core results represent different kinds of processing, so neither number alone settles which phone feels faster. App behavior, software optimization, thermal management, and storage speed also affect perceived speed, as GSMArena’s chipset-ranking explanation notes.

Gaming and graphics
The Razr Ultra posted the higher average graphics score and frame rate in Wild Life Extreme. But its score fell on the third run and its frame rate dropped below 30 FPS. The higher initial result therefore does not mean it maintained that advantage in the stress test.
On-device AI
The Razr Fold recorded the higher average Geekbench AI quantized score. That is evidence about this test setup, not a rule that newer chips always perform better in AI tasks. If a particular AI feature matters to you, check that the exact phone supports it and look for testing of that feature rather than relying only on a benchmark score.

How to choose between two actual phones
- Match the workload. For gaming, compare repeated graphics runs and sustained frame rates. For CPU-heavy work, look at both single-core and multi-core results. For on-device AI, seek tests relevant to the features you will use.
- Check sustained behavior. A peak score captures a brief result; repeated runs and stress tests can reveal heat-related slowdowns or shutdowns. A compact phone’s cooling design can limit what a powerful chip sustains.
- Compare the whole device. Check display, cameras, battery, memory, storage, connectivity, durability, and form factor. The Razr benchmark comparison does not establish those differences for other models.
- Compare ownership terms. Check the exact model’s software-support commitments, warranty, condition, local availability, and price, then weigh them against how long you expect to keep the phone. Those terms vary by model and market and are not determined by the chip benchmarks.
- Separate measured results from vendor claims. Qualcomm’s 8 Gen 5 announcement reports up to 36% performance improvement and 76% better web-browsing responsiveness; these are Qualcomm’s manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independent results for every phone. GSMArena’s 2026 ranking draws on review data for 70 smartphone chips across two and a half years and names the test axes it uses, but phone-level behavior still matters.
Practical decision rule
Choose the older flagship chip when independent tests of the exact phone show an advantage in the demanding tasks you actually do, and that phone is the better value after accounting for heat behavior, support, warranty, and condition. Choose the newer chip when its measured strengths or the complete phone better fit your workload and ownership needs. If sustained gaming matters, prioritize repeated-load results over a single peak benchmark; if neither phone has relevant testing, treat the chip label as a clue, not a verdict.
