If a game is missing from your ROM library—or appears without its title, details, or box art—first check whether the game entry is actually absent, hidden by a filter, or present but incomplete. Then correct the scraper’s search term and game match, request the missing fields or artwork, and make sure any manually added image is linked in the format your frontend expects. The exact menus differ between frontends; the steps below use documented ES-DE and LaunchBox workflows, plus EmulationStation’s gamelist format.
First determine what is missing
“Missing” can describe several different problems: a game may not have been imported, may be hidden from view, may have the wrong title, or may be listed with empty metadata or artwork. Identify which case applies before scraping again.
- Game is absent: Check whether it was imported, assigned to the expected platform, or excluded as a duplicate.
- Game is in the library but not visible: Check active filters and hidden-game settings.
- Game appears with the wrong title or details: Check its matched database record and any alternate display title.
- Game is listed but missing art or descriptive fields: The entry may be correct, but the relevant content was not found, selected, or linked.
LaunchBox’s metadata and media guidance treats import issues, hidden entries, filters, duplicates, platform assignment, and display titles as distinct causes of a missing-looking game. That distinction matters: scraping cannot fix an entry that was never imported or is simply filtered out.
Correct the search term and game match
A scraper needs a useful search term and the right database record. In ES-DE, the default query is the game’s manually set or previously scraped metadata name. If neither is available, ES-DE derives a query from the filename after removing text in parentheses and square brackets. Its user guide also documents an option to search using the physical filename even when metadata already exists. See the ES-DE User Guide v1.2.4 for its version-specific controls.

- Open the game’s metadata editor or single-game scraper in your frontend.
- Inspect the search term. If it is a poor match, try a clean, recognizable game name or the actual filename, using the search options available in that frontend.
- Review the proposed results before applying one. Compare the title, platform, region, and release or version details.
- Apply the correct record, then request the missing metadata or art again.
Do not assume that a working ROM guarantees a correct scrape. Arcade entries can have system- and scraper-specific matching behavior, so confirm the platform and database record rather than applying a console naming workflow automatically. Scrape only the missing information
If an entry already has some information, request the missing fields rather than treating the whole library as unprocessed. ES-DE documents multi-game scraper filters for No metadata and No game image, as well as a single-game scraper opened through the game’s metadata editor.

ES-DE lets you choose content categories, including game names, other metadata, screenshots, title screens, and box covers. Metadata can include a description, release date, developer, publisher, genre, and player count. These fields are separate from media: downloading a screenshot, for example, does not fill a box-cover slot. Select the content type you actually need.
When metadata is present but box art is missing
First confirm that the scraper was asked for box covers and that your frontend is displaying the box-cover media type. A game can have other images—such as a screenshot or title screen—without having cover art.

Next, check that the selected game record and region are right. ES-DE notes that region settings can affect the image returned, including its language; arcade entries may also return unofficial art. Correct the match or region and rescrape the individual game if necessary.
If one database has no usable result, try another database supported by your frontend when it covers the system and content you need. ES-DE’s guide says TheGamesDB covers fewer formats and systems overall, while it may have stronger PC coverage in some areas; ScreenScraper may have some details missing. The documentation does not establish one service as the best choice for every library, so compare system support, available fields and media, region options, and how well the service matches your filenames.

Add artwork manually when scraping does not work
If no database returns suitable art, you can use an image you already have—but the file must be associated with the game, not merely saved somewhere on the device. ES-DE documents copying existing game media into its media setup. EmulationStation’s gamelist documentation shows an image path stored on each game entry.
- Use the metadata editor or documented media setup for your frontend to add the image to the game entry.
- Confirm the image type is the one the frontend view is set to display.
- Check that the saved path points to the actual image file and that the file can be opened.
Folder names and filename conventions vary by frontend and configuration, so do not assume a universal path. Follow the instructions for your specific frontend and verify the path recorded for the game. A file that exists on disk but is not referenced by the entry may not appear in the library.

When a database entry itself is wrong or incomplete
For LaunchBox, correcting the local game match and improving the shared database are separate actions. After fixing your own entry, you can contribute missing games, improved images, alternate names, or corrected release information to the LaunchBox Games Database. A database contribution may help other users, but it is not a substitute for selecting the right record in your own library.
