Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays many games made for the original Nintendo Switch, but not every title works perfectly. Insert a compatible Switch game card, or access eligible digital purchases through the Nintendo Account that owns them. Some games are unsupported or have features that need original Joy-Con controllers, so check the specific title’s current status before relying on it.
Can I play Nintendo Switch games on Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 supports many original Switch games in both physical and digital form. The broad compatibility does not mean every game or feature is guaranteed to work: Nintendo notes that some titles are unsupported or have compatibility issues because of differences between the systems. There is no official overall compatibility percentage in Nintendo’s published guidance.

Nintendo’s detailed compatibility list identifies its status as current on June 5, 2025. Nintendo says testing is limited and that status may change as issues are found or addressed. For the latest information, check the individual game’s Nintendo product page or its Nintendo eShop listing rather than treating that dated list as a definitive 2026 catalog. See Nintendo’s Switch game compatibility list and its Switch 2 compatibility support page.
How to play a game you already own
Physical Switch game cards
Insert a compatible original Switch game card into the Switch 2 game-card slot. Compatibility still depends on the individual title. Nintendo explains how to insert and remove game cards on Switch 2.

Digital purchases
Link the Nintendo Account used to buy a digital game to Switch 2 to access eligible purchases. A system transfer is a separate option: Nintendo says it can move digital games, certain save data, and settings. Digital games are redownloaded after the transfer; downloading a game does not by itself mean its save data has transferred. Check the game’s save-transfer requirements if a particular save matters. Nintendo’s guidance on transferring games from older consoles and its Switch 2 transfer guide explain the distinction.
Virtual game cards
Nintendo’s virtual game cards represent digital games and downloadable content. A loaded card can be played offline on that console, and other users on the console may play it. An account can load virtual game cards on up to two Switch 2 or Switch consoles in any combination; compatible cards can also be lent within a Nintendo Account family group. See Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.

When an original Joy-Con controller may be needed
Joy-Con 2 does not include every feature of the original Joy-Con and may not fit original accessories. For certain games, original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly and provide the needed function or fit. Nintendo’s examples include:
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit the leg strap; original Joy-Con can be used wirelessly.
- 1-2-Switch: Features that use the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require that controller.
- Game Builder Garage: The IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon in Free Programming require an original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 does not fit the leg strap, and Soccer Shoot-Out requires original Joy-Con.
- WarioWare: Move It!: Microgames that use the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
These are title-specific workarounds, not a guarantee that an original controller fixes every compatibility issue. Nintendo’s compatibility list gives the relevant caveats; its support page also covers software and accessories.

Games and apps Nintendo lists as unusable
Nintendo’s detailed list explicitly marks Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unusable because Switch 2 does not fit in the Toy-Con VR Goggles. The same page’s dated status section also lists the Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen apps as unusable on Switch 2. Because the detailed status list is dated June 5, 2025, verify a title or app’s current status with Nintendo before making a decision.
Free updates and paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades
Backward compatibility and a Switch 2 Edition are different things. Some original Switch games receive free updates, which may improve performance or add support for features such as GameShare. Select games also offer a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack with enhancements that vary by game, such as visual improvements, added features, or modes. Certain packs are available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as the original game bundled with an upgrade pack. If you already own the original game physically or digitally, the relevant pack can be purchased through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or participating retailers. Enhanced features and content are for Switch 2; the original game remains playable on the original Switch. Check the individual game listing for what its update or upgrade actually adds. Nintendo explains how to upgrade Nintendo Switch software to a Switch 2 Edition and describes updates and upgrades in its transfer guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check a specific game before you switch
- Look up the exact game. Search Nintendo’s compatibility list, then check the game’s individual Nintendo product page or eShop listing for current status.
- Read the caveat, not just the status. Confirm whether the game is unsupported, has a feature limitation, or needs a particular controller or accessory.
- Match the check to how you own it. For a physical copy, confirm the game card is compatible. For a digital copy, use the Nintendo Account that owns it and decide whether to access the purchase directly or use system transfer.
- Check save handling separately. If you need existing progress, confirm the applicable save-transfer method; a game’s availability or redownload does not establish that its save moved.
- Compare any upgrade with the original game. Check whether the title has a free update or a separately sold Switch 2 Edition upgrade, and review the pack’s specific contents before paying.
