Check each RPG separately in Nintendo’s official Switch game compatibility checker, then look up whether that specific game has a free update or a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. Compatibility answers whether your existing Switch game can be played; an upgrade adds title-specific enhancements and is a separate question.
Check whether the RPG you own runs on Switch 2
- Find the exact game title. Include the edition or publisher if multiple versions have similar names.
- Search Nintendo’s compatibility checker. Use its search box to find the game and read the full result, including any notes about known issues. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but some games may not be supported or may not work fully.
- Ask the publisher about third-party games if you need a definitive answer. Nintendo recommends contacting the game’s publisher for specific compatibility information about titles it did not publish.
- Check again near the time you plan to play. Nintendo says future testing or updates may change compatibility; some games may take longer to become playable or may remain unsupported.
A game starting successfully does not necessarily mean every feature works as intended. Treat any compatibility notes as part of the result, not as a guarantee of full functionality.

Check separately for a free update or paid upgrade pack
A compatible Switch game does not automatically receive Switch 2 enhancements. Look up the game’s current official information in Nintendo eShop or the game’s official listing. Search for “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition,” “upgrade pack,” and announcements of free updates.

What a Switch 2 Edition upgrade includes and how to get it
Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle containing the original Switch game and its upgrade pack. If you own the original game, whether physical or digital, Nintendo says selected packs can be obtained through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or retailers. Some packs are available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. Availability and enhancements vary by game, and Switch 2 Edition features can only be played on Switch 2.

Do not assume that an upgrade pack exists for every compatible RPG, or that every pack is free. Confirm the specific game’s listing and the terms shown for your copy before downloading or buying anything.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: a dated free-update example
In an announcement published May 29, 2025, Nintendo named Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet among the games scheduled to receive free Switch 2 enhancements on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s instructions said to connect Switch 2 to the internet and update the system before downloading the game updates. This example applies to those named games and that announcement; it does not establish the update status of every Pokémon RPG or provide a complete current list.

Check region and edition before using an upgrade pack
If your base game and upgrade pack come from different regions, do not assume they will work together. Nintendo says regional compatibility depends on the software. Compare the pack’s listing with your exact game edition and region, and check the publisher’s guidance where needed.
