Why AI listing editors invent details
Generative AI predicts likely word sequences; it does not reliably retrieve or verify product specifications. As a result, a polished draft may include plausible but unsupported claims about dimensions, materials, compatibility, included accessories, warranties, safety, or performance. Google Search Central warns that AI-generated content can contain inaccuracies and recommends manual fact-checking and review before publication, including for metadata. Google Search Central’s guidance on generative AI content was updated October 1, 2026.
Build a workflow that keeps claims tied to evidence
The following process applies Google’s review guidance to ecommerce catalog work. It is a practical editorial control, not a guarantee that an AI system will never invent a detail.

Maintain an approved record for each product and variant
Use a current catalog record or source document containing only substantiated details. Depending on the product, that may include model identifiers, dimensions, materials, included components, compatibility, warranty, and supported performance claims. Keep variant-specific facts separate so that one model’s specification is not accidentally applied to another.

Constrain the AI to the supplied facts
Give the editor only the approved fields relevant to the listing, and ask it to rewrite or organize those facts without adding new ones. Specify that absent or conflicting information must be left blank or flagged for human review. Do not invite it to infer specifications from a product name, image, neighboring variant, or category convention.

Make every concrete claim traceable
For each factual statement in the draft, require an editor to identify the approved field or source document that supports it. Give extra scrutiny to claims about compatibility, safety, health, origin, durability, and performance, where an unsupported statement can carry particular risk.

Compare the draft with the record, then review the final listing
Check the edited copy against the approved product data and correct mismatches before publication. A human should review both the customer-facing listing and relevant metadata. If the underlying product record is wrong or incomplete, correct it at the source when appropriate so the same error does not recur across sales channels.

Keep channel-specific AI rules current
Requirements can differ by platform. Google says that AI-generated product title and description attributes in Merchant Center must be specified separately and labeled as AI-generated. Follow the applicable channel’s current instructions rather than assuming a single labeling rule applies everywhere.

What to do when a product fact is missing or disputed
- Missing: Omit the detail or mark it for review. Do not let the editor fill the gap with a likely value.
- Conflicting: Pause publication of the claim and resolve the disagreement against an authoritative product source. Do not choose whichever value makes the copy read more smoothly.
- Unsupported claim in a draft: Remove it unless an approved record or source document substantiates it.
- High-impact claim: Escalate statements involving safety, health, compatibility, origin, durability, or performance to the appropriate subject-matter or compliance reviewer.
These controls align with the Federal Trade Commission’s U.S. advertising guidance: “Under the law, claims in advertisements must be truthful, cannot be deceptive or unfair, and must be evidence-based.” See the FTC’s Advertising and Marketing Basics. This is general U.S. guidance, not a detailed standard for AI listing editors or a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
Do not treat AI accuracy statistics as a listing-editor score
The official sources cited here do not establish a general rate at which AI listing editors invent product details. Numbers from unrelated AI cases should not be used as a proxy. For example, the FTC’s Workado case materials discuss claims about an AI content detector—an advertised 98 percent accuracy figure and independent testing at 53 percent on general-purpose content—not the accuracy of product listing editors. The FTC’s Workado case record was updated August 28, 2025.

If you need to assess your own process, track errors on representative listings: identify unsupported claims, record where they appeared, and use the findings to improve the source data and review steps. Do not present that internal result as a universal model-accuracy rate.
