Move a high-performance server into a networking closet only after confirming that the destination, route, handling plan, and rack can safely support the exact system. A closet’s name does not establish that it has enough cooling, power, airflow, or floor capacity. Check the server’s current manual and have facilities staff assess any uncertain site conditions before scheduling downtime.
1. Confirm the closet can support the server
Identify the exact server model and its populated weight, dimensions, environmental limits, electrical requirements, airflow direction, rail compatibility, and any liquid-cooling connections. Compare those requirements with the closet’s cooling capacity under load, electrical service and grounding, rack rating, floor capacity, ventilation, and service access. The exact acceptable limits must come from the equipment documentation and a site-specific assessment.
ASHRAE’s datacom facility guidance addresses thermal conditions, airflow, power, and structural factors. See ASHRAE Datacom Series for facility guidance; it does not substitute for the server’s limits or an assessment of your particular room.
Check the floor along the entire route as well as at the final rack. ASHRAE’s storage guidance recommends following manufacturers’ floor-loading guidelines and having a facilities engineer familiar with floor loading prepare a plan for moving heavy equipment. A raised-floor route may need reinforcement before equipment is moved. See ASHRAE storage systems guidance.

2. Plan the route and choose a safe handling method
Measure door openings, turns, elevator clearances, thresholds, and the space needed to approach the rack. Include the lift or other moving equipment in those measurements. Clear the route and use a spotter where visibility or clearance is limited. Keep the chassis stable, use only designated lifting points, and do not lift or pull it by component handles, rails, or cables.
Use the populated chassis weight
Follow the handling instructions for the exact model. For example, Dell’s PowerEdge XE9680 guidance assigns two people to a 40–70 lb system, three people to a 70–120 lb system, and requires a server lift at 121 lb or more. These thresholds are specific to the XE9680 manual, not universal rules. That manual also warns that heavy equipment may slide when installed or removed from a higher rack position and directs users to designated chassis lifting handles. See Dell PowerEdge XE9680 handling guidance.

- 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
Dell’s PowerEdge XE9785L manual recommends a rack lift with two or more people to place its heavy sled in the rack, and warns against lifting the full chassis weight by external levers. See Dell PowerEdge XE9785L rack-installation guidance.
If the manual calls for a lift, compare the lift’s rated load with the fully populated chassis weight. Also confirm that its platform or arms fit the chassis dimensions, that it can reach the planned rack height, and that it can maneuver in the route and closet. Follow the lift and rack manufacturers’ instructions, including any stabilizing requirements. Do not assume a lift that can bear the weight will necessarily fit or reach safely.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
3. Prepare the system and isolate power
- Schedule the work. Arrange an outage or workload migration window and confirm backups and recovery plans before disconnecting the server.
- Document connections. Label power, network, and management cables and record their ports and routing so they can be reconnected correctly.
- Shut down using the model’s procedure. Follow the server’s own service manual for an orderly shutdown and any preparation required for transport.
- Disconnect every power feed. Redundant supplies can leave a system connected to power even after one cord is removed. Dell’s Data Domain guidance, for example, says both power supplies must be disconnected to remove system power completely; apply the rule in the specific model’s manual to your system. See Dell Data Domain power-removal guidance.
- Prepare for transport as directed. Follow the manual on removing accessories, rails, or components. Protect exposed components from electrostatic discharge and impact as the manufacturer specifies. Do not assume that instructions for another server mean you should remove a drive, GPU, or liquid-cooling component.
4. Move and install the server in the rack
Use a properly rated server lift or other manufacturer-approved handling equipment when required. Move slowly, keep the route clear, and maintain control of the chassis throughout. Confirm that the rack is stable and use the rail kit specified for the server. Install the chassis at the intended rack position and secure it according to its installation guide.
Follow the cabinet’s loading instructions when deciding where equipment belongs. Dell’s DD9300 guide, for example, directs users to install storage shelves from the bottom to avoid making a rack top-heavy; do not treat that instruction as a substitute for the loading guidance for your own rack and equipment. See Dell DD9300 shelf-installation guidance.

5. Reconnect and verify before restoring workloads
Reconnect labeled power, network, and management cables according to your diagram and the equipment manual. Check that grounding, supply voltage, circuit capacity, and any required redundant feeds are correct. Make sure cooling air can reach the server’s intended inlets and that exhaust is not recirculating into them; ASHRAE identifies airflow and inlet conditions as core facility considerations.
