Neither a large mAh number nor a high wattage rating alone tells you which phone will last longer or suit you better.
What matters more: battery capacity or charging speed?
A larger battery can contribute to longer runtime, but the phone’s power use matters too. The European Commission explains that a lower-power device can achieve the same battery life with a smaller battery than a higher-power device. That is why mAh is not a direct measure of hours: it describes capacity, not how quickly a particular phone uses that stored energy. European Commission impact assessment
Fast charging addresses a different problem: how long you need to stay connected to a charger to add useful charge. It can be more valuable than extra capacity if your phone is usually near an outlet and you can plug in briefly between activities. This is a use-case judgment, not a universal technical rule.
Which should you prioritize for your routine?
Prioritize measured runtime if you cannot count on outlets
Commuters, travelers, field workers, and heavy users who regularly reach low battery before the day ends should start with independently measured runtime. Then consider charging speed as a secondary convenience. A large capacity figure is not enough if a phone’s power draw is also high.

Prioritize fast charging if you have short charging windows
If you have access to a desk, outlet, or other reliable charging point but only brief breaks, the time a phone takes to reach a useful charge level may matter more in everyday use than its maximum capacity. Check how long the specific phone takes to reach a practical level, not just its advertised maximum wattage.
Ask yourself which problem happens more often
- Do you regularly run out of charge when you cannot plug in? Put measured runtime first.
- Can you plug in during the day, but only for short periods? Give more weight to tested charge times.
- Do both happen? Compare both measures under disclosed test conditions, then weigh them against your own pattern of use.
How to compare phones fairly
Look for observed battery runtime and elapsed charging time rather than comparing mAh and watts alone. Test results are useful only when you understand how they were produced. For each result, check:

- Runtime test profile: What tasks or workload did the test use, and how long did the phone last under that profile?
- Screen and network conditions: Check reported brightness, network connection, and whether the test used Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Charging setup: Check the starting charge level, phone state, charger, and cable, along with any reported temperature or usage conditions.
- Useful charge milestones: Compare the time to reach the same charge level, such as 30 minutes, rather than comparing unlike claims such as time to full versus percentage gained.
- Model and date: Confirm the exact model or regional variant, test date, and whether the result applies to the hardware and software version being sold.
PhoneArena’s battery table is one example of an independent test source that reports runtime and charging results alongside method details. Its current conditions page specifies 200 nits fixed brightness for the battery test, Wi-Fi only, and a charging test beginning at 1% with the phone powered on. Why advertised charging times can differ from yours
Fast-charging performance depends on more than the adapter’s wattage. Google says charging speed can vary with phone use while charging, battery age, and ambient temperature. Nothing also says charger protocol and temperature affect charging speed. A manufacturer’s timing figure therefore describes a particular setup, not a promise that every compatible-looking charger will reproduce that result. As specific manufacturer examples, Nothing Support lists a 5,000 mAh capacity and approximately one hour to charge fully with the official Nothing charger; it cautions that charging time varies with temperature and charger protocol. Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 specification lists 4,300 mAh and up to 55% charge in around 30 minutes with a 25 W adapter. Samsung says that adapter is sold separately and its test began with the phone at 0% remaining, with the screen and services off; actual speed varies with use and charging conditions. For the Galaxy S26+, Samsung lists 4,900 mAh and up to 69% in around 30 minutes with a 45 W adapter under its internal test conditions. Check charger compatibility, not just wattage
A charger’s printed wattage is not a guarantee that a phone will draw that much power. The phone must support the charger’s protocol, and the cable and charging conditions also matter. Before buying an adapter, check the exact phone model’s charging specification and manufacturer guidance. For example, Nothing recommends PPS for the phone covered by its support article; that model-specific advice is not a universal rule for all phones.

Battery life is not battery lifespan
Apple defines “battery life” as the amount of time a device runs before it needs recharging, and distinguishes it from “battery lifespan,” the time a battery lasts until it needs replacement. Apple also notes that chemically aged lithium-ion batteries hold less charge. A phone that lasts a long time on one charge when new is not, on that fact alone, proven to retain its capacity for longer over years of use. Apple Support: iPhone battery and performance
The sources cited here describe battery aging, temperature, charging conditions, and device management, but do not establish a universal amount of long-term degradation caused by fast charging across smartphone models. Avoid treating fast charging as inevitably harmful or assuming that a headline runtime figure predicts battery longevity.
