Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA Game Boy Color does not charge over USB-C from the factory. If yours has a USB-C port, it has an aftermarket charging modification, and the right fix depends on the exact kit, board revision, battery, and screen installed. Identify those first, then check the battery connection, the kit’s own status indicators, the USB-C port, and the console’s original power circuit—in that order.
1. Identify the USB-C charging kit and its revision
Before opening the console or interpreting a charging light, read the label on the installed board and compare it with the purchase record or installation instructions. Also identify the battery and screen: a standard charging board and a PRO board may look similar while using different circuits and supporting different functions.
- Standard giltesa kit: Uses a separate Li-ion battery and retains the original voltage regulator. Its maker describes red as charging and green as fully charged. See the standard kit page and standard-kit repository.
- giltesa PRO kit: Combines a charger, boost converter, and amplifier. Its 5 V output is documented for aftermarket IPS screens, not the original LCD. Charge-and-play support begins with version 3.1, according to the PRO kit page.
- Game Boy Pocket/Color kit: This is a separate design with different installation requirements. Its repository says fitting USB-C and a lithium battery requires shell trimming: Game Boy Pocket/Color kit details.
Do not assume that a different kit’s LED meanings, wiring, battery requirements, or simultaneous-play support apply to your board. If the board revision is not legible, use the installation guide or ask the kit maker to identify it before testing further.
2. Check the battery and its connection safely
- Turn off the Game Boy Color and disconnect USB power before opening the shell.
- Follow the guide for the exact board revision to check battery polarity and connector seating. Inspect visible solder joints and wires for looseness or damage.
- Confirm the battery is the type and size supported by that board and physically fits without being pinched. The standard kit listing gives example cell formats, but compatibility depends on the installed board and available shell space.
- Stop using a battery that is swollen, damaged, or unusually hot. Never short its terminals.
A poor battery connection or depleted or damaged cell can prevent charging or leave the console without power even if USB is connected. Replace a cell only with one compatible with the particular kit; do not choose by connector shape alone.

3. Interpret the charging light using the kit’s guide
For the standard giltesa kit, the maker describes red as charging and green as charge complete. An optional light board can move status indications to the Game Boy Color’s original LED position. Those meanings are specific to that kit; a dark or differently colored light on another board is not a universal fault code.
The TP4056 charger-chip datasheet describes a temperature-sense input that can suspend charging when its voltage is outside the permitted range. It states: “If TEMP pin’s voltage is below 45% or above 80% of supply voltage VIN for more than 0.15S, this means that battery’s temperature is too high or too low, charging is suspended.” That is the chip manufacturer’s description; how a particular mod implements the circuit and indicates its status can differ. See the TP4056 datasheet, revision 2.0.

- No light: Check the exact board guide, battery connection, and USB input before concluding the board has failed. A missing light alone does not identify the cause.
- Unexpected light behavior: Verify the board model and revision against its manual; do not apply another kit’s LED meanings.
- Unusual heat: Disconnect USB power if it is safe to do so, stop using the console, and have the installation inspected. Do not leave a suspect lithium cell charging unattended or defeat charging protection to change an indicator.
4. Check the USB-C input, cable, and installation
With USB power disconnected, compare the port and board wiring with the instructions for the installed revision. Look for a loose port, cracked solder joints, lifted pads, damaged wires, or a cable that does not seat properly. A known-good cable and power source can help rule out a simple input problem, but the available kit documentation does not establish one universal charger requirement for every Game Boy Color USB-C modification.
Avoid probing exposed USB or battery power connections in a way that could short them. If the port or soldering looks damaged, stop rather than repeatedly plugging it in; a repairer familiar with handheld-console boards can inspect it.

5. If the board indicates charging but the console will not run
Charging a battery and powering the console are separate parts of the circuit. If the charging board reports a normal state but the Game Boy Color will not turn on, the battery output connection or the console’s retained power path may be at fault.
Game Boy Resource identifies F1 as the main system fuse and F2 as protection for the DC jack. It also recommends checking continuity between DC-jack pins 2 and 3 where corrosion may interrupt the battery circuit. These are board-level electrical checks, not routine USB troubleshooting. If you are inexperienced with electronics repair, use a qualified repairer; never bridge a fuse or bypass a protection component. See Game Boy Resource’s Game Boy Color hardware notes.

6. Confirm screen and regulator compatibility before replacing parts
Some apparent charging problems arise from expecting a kit to do something its circuit does not support. The standard giltesa kit is designed around the original voltage regulator. Its maker says an alternative regulator must support the kit battery’s stated 2.75–4.2 V range. Check the exact board instructions before changing regulators or substituting components.
The PRO kit’s documented 5 V output is for aftermarket IPS screens, not the original display. Its compatibility information lists Game Boy Color motherboard versions and an EM4-related wiring difference; check that page and the current manual against your motherboard before modifying connections. Standard and PRO boards are not interchangeable simply because both add USB-C charging.

Meanwhile, the body of the cable is usually wrapped in soft and wear-resistant plastic or rubber, and the high-quality copper core is not easy to be damaged
Can you play while charging?
Only rely on charge-and-play support when the exact installed board revision documents it. The PRO kit page says this support starts with version 3.1 and warns that earlier versions do not support it. The standard-kit documentation reviewed here does not describe safe simultaneous play. A 2022 installation-video description for an earlier PRO sample also says simultaneous charging and play had not been implemented on that sample, so do not generalize a current revision’s capability to older hardware.
What runtime figures do—and do not—tell you
The maker publishes demonstrations, not independent battery-life benchmarks or guarantees. The standard-kit repository reports 8 hours 40 minutes with a 1500 mAh battery but does not state the setup conditions. The PRO product page reports 6 hours 30 minutes with an IPS V3 laminated screen at 100% brightness, system sound at 100%, amplifier at 50%, a flash cartridge, and a 1800 mAh battery. It also describes about two hours of charging while playing with an IPS V3 laminated screen, 20% system sound, amplifier at 50%, a flash cartridge, and a 1500 mAh battery. Those results apply to the maker’s described setups, not every console or PRO revision.
The reviewed sources do not establish a typical charging time, a population-level failure rate, or an independent typical runtime for Game Boy Color USB-C conversions. Treat a much shorter runtime as a reason to check battery condition, screen power demand, and installation compatibility—not as proof that the charging board is defective.
When to stop troubleshooting
- The battery is swollen, damaged, or unusually hot.
- The board, port, or shell becomes unusually hot during charging.
- You see loose wiring, cracked joints, lifted pads, corrosion, or a visibly damaged port.
- Diagnosis would require bypassing a fuse, defeating charge protection, or testing exposed power connections without suitable repair experience.
In these cases, disconnect power if safe and have the installation checked by a repairer familiar with Game Boy Color boards and lithium-battery modifications.
