Before choosing AirPods 5 or another pair of wireless earbuds, compare how each design fits your ears, how much noise isolation or awareness you want, which features work with your phone, and battery life under comparable settings. No specification can predict your personal comfort or sound preference, so fit and current local pricing matter as much as headline features.
Which earbuds belong in a useful comparison?
AirPods 5 are an open-fit reference point: they do not use silicone tips to seal the ear canal. Compare them with alternatives that represent different priorities rather than assuming every model is a direct substitute.
- AirPods Pro 3: A sealed-fit Apple option for listeners who want silicone tips and stronger noise cancellation. Apple says Pro 3 offers “up to 3x more Active Noise Cancellation” than AirPods 5 when tested under IEC 60268-24. That is Apple’s manufacturer claim under a named test standard, not an independent head-to-head result. Apple’s AirPods comparison lists both models.
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation: Another open-fit Apple option, useful if you prefer not to have silicone tips but want ANC. What Hi-Fi?’s February 4, 2026 comparison discusses its open design alongside the Pro 3.

How does fit affect comfort and isolation?
Open earbuds sit at the entrance of the ear without forming the same silicone-tip seal as in-ear models. Sealed earbuds can provide a closer fit and passive isolation, but the sensation may not suit everyone. Comfort varies by ear shape, and a poor seal can undermine both comfort and perceived isolation.
Try the fit if possible, especially when choosing a sealed model. Do not assume an open design is always more comfortable or that a sealed design will fit every listener securely.

Compare noise control by use case, not just by label
Active noise cancellation (ANC) is not the same as transparency or ambient listening modes, which let outside sound through. Adaptive and conversation features are separate functions too. Decide whether your priority is reducing steady background noise, hearing your surroundings, or switching between the two.
For a fair ANC comparison, look for independent tests performed in comparable conditions and consider the environments you actually use: commuting, an office, or home. Keep Apple’s “up to 3x” comparison in context: it compares AirPods Pro 3 with AirPods 5 under IEC 60268-24 and comes from Apple, not an independent review.

Check battery figures under comparable settings
Battery claims can describe listening time per charge or total time with the case, and results depend on features such as ANC and spatial audio. Do not treat manufacturer figures measured under different conditions as though they came from a shared laboratory protocol.
- Check whether the figure is for one charge or includes recharges from the case.
- Note whether ANC, spatial audio, or other power-consuming features are enabled in the stated test conditions.
- Compare figures only when the measurement basis and settings are clear; otherwise treat them as model-specific claims rather than a precise ranking.
Check phone compatibility before valuing special features
Some earbud features are tied to a particular phone brand, model family, or software version. Samsung says Galaxy Buds4 Pro UHQ audio is available up to 24-bit/96 kHz only on specified Galaxy device families and supported software; this is not a promise that every Android phone can use it. Samsung also says the Galaxy Wearable app is not supported on iOS on its US product page.

Samsung’s February 25, 2026 Galaxy Buds4 launch announcement notes that Super Wideband calling depends on the device and mobile network. Confirm current compatibility for your exact phone and software before paying extra for a feature you may not be able to use.
Evaluate sound and calls in your own setup
Separate feature descriptions from listening results. A codec or audio-resolution label indicates a supported capability under specified conditions; it does not establish that every listener will hear a difference. Fit and seal also affect the listening experience.

For calls, consider your phone, calling apps, and network as well as the earbuds. In particular, Samsung’s Super Wideband call support is subject to device and mobile-network dependencies. If possible, assess call quality in the apps and environments you actually use.

Check what the specific model’s charging case supports, whether it has tracking or speaker features, and how the earbuds are controlled. Do not assume that a feature or water-and-dust rating advertised for one product applies to every model in the same brand’s range. Use each model’s own product details to verify the case functions, controls, and rating that matter to you.

Apple’s comparison page lists AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case as separate configurations. Check which configuration a listing includes instead of assuming every AirPods 5 package has the same case.
Use current local prices—not old launch prices—to judge value
Prices and discounts vary by country and retailer, so check the price available to you when you are ready to buy. What Hi-Fi?’s February 2026 article records these launch prices, which are historical reference points rather than current offers:
