Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping can track prices and, for eligible users and products, buy at a target price. ChatGPT is strongest as a product-research and comparison workflow; its eligible Instant Checkout orders are handled by merchants. Gemini supports reviewed checkout and an order-history view, while Google’s broader spending guardrails were announced for future rollout—not confirmed as available to every shopper.
These tools use “budget” in different ways: a search limit or price alert is not the same as a cap on what an agent can spend. Availability also depends on your country, account, product, and merchant.
What counts as a budget, approval, or receipt?
Before comparing tools, separate four steps that are often bundled together under “AI shopping”: finding and comparing products, setting a price or spending condition, authorizing payment, and keeping a record after purchase.
- Search budget: helps narrow recommendations, but does not necessarily prevent a more expensive purchase.
- Target price: can trigger an alert or an eligible purchase if the price reaches a specified level.
- Approval: may mean confirming each order, reviewing a prepared checkout, or explicitly allowing bounded automatic purchases.
- Receipt or order record: can be an agent’s order list, a merchant email, or tracking information. It is not automatically a substitute for the seller’s receipt, return process, or support channel.
The comparison below reflects features documented by the vendors, not independently tested reliability, savings, or purchase success rates.

Which tool gives you the most control over spending?
Shopify Shop: set a limit for delegated buying
Shop’s agent connection makes the distinction between review and delegation explicit: by default, the connected agent prepares checkout for you to approve. If you enable payment without manual approval, you can set a weekly, monthly, or total budget. Shop also warns that connected agents can make mistakes about price, tax, availability, or return information, and that approving or delegating a purchase leaves you responsible for it. Amazon: target-price automation, not just a search filter
Alexa for Shopping (the name Amazon uses after renaming Rufus in May 2026) supports searching by price, price history and alerts, and scheduled actions. Some actions add items to your cart for you to review and check out; Auto Buy can make a purchase at a set price when the feature is enabled and the item is eligible. That is a different level of authority from asking for “Men’s jeans under $40” or “Best toys under $15,” which Amazon gives as examples of shopping queries. ChatGPT: budget-guided discovery
Shopping Research can use a budget alongside other preferences to build and refine a comparison guide with merchant links. That is useful for narrowing options, but a stated budget in a prompt should not be treated as a hard cap on payment. OpenAI describes product results as independently selected rather than ads or partnership-influenced; prices and availability can still be stale, so verify the final listing with the seller. Google: price targets now; broader guardrails announced
Gemini can compare products and track a target price. Separately, Google’s May 2026 Universal Cart and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) announcement described agents following product and spending criteria, with the post saying the guardrails would begin arriving in Google products in the coming months. Treat that as a rollout announcement, not proof that a hard spending cap is live for every Gemini shopper. Google’s Universal Cart and AP2 announcement describes the planned controls.

Who confirms and processes a purchase?
Merchant checkout remains decisive for ChatGPT Instant Checkout
ChatGPT product cards and Shopping Research do not by themselves mean the assistant can buy autonomously. Instant Checkout is shown only for some eligible products and merchants. Under OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, merchant systems validate the order, determine fulfillment, charge the payment method, and confirm the order; OpenAI says it is not the merchant of record. Gemini checkout requires a review step
Google’s Gemini shopping help describes a checkout flow in which users review order details and select Pay with Google Pay. Its examples show the kind of comparison prompt a shopper might use, such as “Find me a new laptop for university under £800.” That prompt is an example of user phrasing, not evidence of how often people ask it. Purchases are limited to supported countries, personal Google accounts, and selected merchants; check the Gemini shopping and order-management help page for current availability.

Amazon and Shop depend on the setting you choose
Amazon’s cart-review actions leave checkout with you, while Auto Buy is the explicitly enabled, eligibility-dependent purchase action. Shop’s default is also review and approval, with no-manual-approval purchases available only if you opt in. In either case, do not assume that asking an assistant to find a low price has authorized it to pay.

Gemini has a documented order view
Google’s My Orders view can show the merchant, order total, status, payment method, and order ID. The merchant also sends a confirmation email. Keep that email and use the merchant’s own channel for returns, cancellation, or support; an agent-side listing is not a replacement for the seller’s process.

ChatGPT relies on merchant order state
For Instant Checkout, OpenAI says confirmation and order state come from merchant systems. Look for the merchant’s email or order page rather than assuming ChatGPT maintains the authoritative receipt.
Amazon and Shop emphasize tracking or connected data
Amazon documents package tracking and order-status help, but its cited announcement does not specify a separate receipt dashboard for Alexa for Shopping. Shop can use order data for tracking, including orders with email receipts received at the connected address; connecting an agent may share account details and purchase approvals with that platform under its own privacy terms. Read Shop’s connected-agent terms before enabling access.
How should you choose and check an agent?
Choose based on the authority you actually want to delegate, not on the word “agent.” For constrained research, ChatGPT Shopping Research is oriented around comparing options against stated needs. For price-triggered action, Alexa for Shopping offers scheduled or eligible target-price purchase behavior. For an explicit no-approval budget, Shop documents weekly, monthly, or total limits. Gemini combines shopping and an order view, while its broader AP2 spend guardrails were described as a coming rollout.
- Confirm availability: check your region, account type, specific item, and seller. Rollouts and supported merchants vary.
- Identify the control: determine whether your number is only a search filter, a price-alert threshold, a per-order approval, or a delegated spending cap.
- Review checkout before payment: verify merchant, item, final total including tax and shipping, delivery address, payment method, availability, and return terms.
- Keep the seller’s records: save the merchant confirmation and receipt, and use the merchant’s own order page for changes or returns.
- Check the permission you granted: confirm whether the tool can only prepare a cart, can buy at a target price, or can spend without asking, and review any budget and connected-data permissions.
What do the vendors’ scale figures establish?
Amazon reported that Alexa for Shopping’s predecessor, Rufus, helped more than 300 million customers research, compare, and buy during 2025. Google reported that its Shopping Graph contained more than 50 billion product listings, with 2 billion updated every hour, in its 2025 shopping-feature announcement. These are vendor-reported usage and catalog figures; neither establishes comparative agent accuracy, customer satisfaction, purchase success, or savings.
