Nintendo says the console’s air vents must remain unobstructed and that there must be adequate ventilation around the console and AC adapter. Nintendo does not specifically address charging inside a carrying case, so removing it is a cautious way to follow those ventilation requirements—not a case-specific prohibition from Nintendo.
Why you should remove the Switch 2 from its case
A closed or partly closed case can restrict airflow around the console. Nintendo warns users not to cover the console’s air intakes or vents while charging and calls for adequate ventilation around both the system and adapter. Because Nintendo does not endorse or provide instructions for charging the console inside a carrying case, the safest routine is to remove it before connecting power. How to charge it safely
- Take the console out of the case. Open the case and remove the Switch 2 before connecting the charger.
- Choose an open, stable surface. Keep the console’s vents clear and avoid heat sources, direct sunlight, or piles of fabric. Leave room for airflow around the AC adapter too.
- Connect a compatible adapter. Use the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01) for direct charging, or use the Switch 2 dock with its appropriate adapter.
- Check the equipment. Do not use a damaged adapter or cable. If the console or adapter becomes unusually hot, stop charging and move it to a cooler, ventilated place. If the problem continues, contact Nintendo Support.
Nintendo gives an approximate full-charge time of 3 hours for Switch 2 systems. This is a general estimate, not a guaranteed duration or a measurement for charging in a case; actual charging conditions can affect the time. Nintendo’s charging instructions
Which adapter should you use?

Nintendo says an adapter rated at 54 W or more can be used if a licensed adapter is unavailable, but also notes that unlicensed products are not tested and evaluated by Nintendo and may have compatibility problems. That guidance is not a guarantee that any USB-C charger with that wattage will work safely or correctly. Follow the console’s power requirements and use approved, compatible equipment. Heat, ventilation, and liquid precautions
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 operating temperature range as 5–35°C (41–95°F). Keep the console and adapter ventilated, and do not charge in an excessively hot location. If liquid has entered the system, do not charge it; contact Nintendo Support for guidance. For dock-related overheating, Nintendo recommends an open, ventilated area and keeping the dock vent unobstructed.
What if the case maker says charging inside is okay?
Follow Nintendo’s requirements first: vents must remain unobstructed, and there must be adequate ventilation around the system and adapter. The Nintendo guidance cited here does not establish that any particular carrying case is safe for charging while the console is enclosed. Unless the case maker gives specific airflow and charging instructions, remove the console from the case before charging.
