If your Blu-ray drive reports a model that does not match what you bought, stop before changing its firmware. Save the listing, order details, packaging, labels, and reported model and firmware; then check the exact hardware against guidance for your intended use and contact the seller if it appears misrepresented. A firmware string is a clue, not proof of what mechanism is inside.
Why a firmware-reported model may not be trustworthy
On September 30, 2026, the RPCS3 project warned of a recent influx of fake Blu-ray drives. Tom’s Hardware reported that the described fakes use older mechanisms that cannot read PS3 discs, fitted inside enclosures and packaging for higher-end models, with spoofed firmware. The warning does not include a count or estimate of how common these drives are.
A drive utility or operating system may display a model name supplied by the drive’s firmware. That displayed identity alone does not establish the mechanism’s provenance or capabilities. MakeMKV’s support forum documentation cautions that drives with exactly the same name can have different hardware, and that compatibility depends on the precise drive and firmware version. What to do first
1. Pause firmware changes
Do not flash, cross-flash, or try to make the drive report a different model while you are checking it or considering a return. A firmware write changes the device’s current state and may complicate diagnosis or a seller’s assessment. This is prudent handling advice, not a claim about a universal warranty rule.
2. Preserve the evidence
- Save the product page, including the seller identity and the claims about model and compatibility.
- Keep the order confirmation, packaging, labels, and any included paperwork.
- Take clear photos of the drive and packaging, including any label details you are concerned about.
- Record the model and firmware shown by the operating system or drive utility. Identify these as reported values, not verified hardware identity.
- Save seller communications and any compatibility-test errors or results.
3. Inspect the exterior without opening the drive
Tom’s Hardware describes possible warning signs such as misspellings on labels, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates, and material covering PCB markings. These observations may justify further checking, but none proves on its own that a unit is counterfeit. Avoid opening the drive solely to inspect its circuit board if doing so could damage it or affect return eligibility.

4. Check the exact hardware for your intended task
Use available non-invasive information to identify the exact model and revision, then compare it with current guidance for the job you need done. For example, ordinary Blu-ray movie playback does not show that a drive can read PS3 discs. If software reports a chipset or other hardware detail, treat it as one clue and compare it with independent identifiers rather than relying on the firmware model string alone. The RPCS3 warning links to a Redump guide with identification information; consult that guide directly for its current details.
5. Contact the seller through protected channels
If the drive does not match the listing or advertised function, send your saved evidence through the marketplace’s official return or dispute process and request an appropriate resolution, such as a return or refund. Keep correspondence on-platform where possible. Act promptly: applicable rights and deadlines depend on your location, transaction terms, and marketplace policy.

6. Describe what you found, not what you cannot prove
When contacting the seller or discussing the issue publicly, state the listing claim, observable discrepancies, and test results. A spoofable firmware string or cosmetic mismatch is reason to investigate, not conclusive proof of fraud.

If you decide to replace the drive, compare the exact mechanism and revision with compatibility guidance for your intended task. Weigh independent hardware indicators against the firmware-reported identity, and check the seller’s history and return terms. Do not choose by enclosure appearance or displayed model string alone. The evidence available does not establish a universal replacement model or guarantee that a particular drive is available from any marketplace.
What can and cannot be established
The reported warning concerns drives intended for PS3-disc use and describes one alleged pattern: older mechanisms inside higher-end shells with spoofed firmware. It does not quantify how widespread the problem is, authenticate a specific unit, or establish universal return rights. Without a reliable identification of the exact mechanism and revision, exterior appearance and software-reported identity cannot settle the question.
