To reduce razor bumps and irritation, let facial hair grow if you can. If you shave, soften the hair first, use moisturizing shaving cream or gel, shave with the grain using light, short strokes, and avoid stretching skin or making repeated close passes. For beard upkeep, use a lubricating product with an electric trimmer rather than chasing a close shave.
Why shaving can cause bumps and irritation
Razor bumps are often ingrown hairs: a short hair curves back into the skin as it grows. Shaving can also irritate skin without causing an ingrown hair. Anyone can experience shaving irritation; pseudofolliculitis barbae is especially associated with coarse or curly beard hair. Skin tone alone does not determine risk. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) and its guidance on razor-bump remedies describe these concerns.
Choose between growing, trimming, and shaving
Letting hair grow
If it suits you, stop shaving and let the hair grow. This removes shaving as the trigger for razor bumps, though it may not suit your grooming needs.
Trimming a beard
For beard maintenance, the AAD recommends applying shaving oil, cream, or gel and using an electric razor or trimmer. Scissors can help with longer facial hair. Trimming is not a guarantee against bumps, but it avoids pursuing a very close blade shave. See the AAD’s beard-care guidance.

Shaving close
If you need a close shave, consider a sharp single- or double-blade razor rather than a multi-blade razor if close shaving tends to trigger bumps. No razor type is best for everyone, and a single blade is not a treatment. AAD guidance on hair removal options discusses these choices.
A lower-irritation shaving routine
- Soften the hair. Wash gently, then wet facial hair with warm water, shave after a shower, or hold a warm damp cloth against the area. The AAD’s shaving guidance recommends preparing hair and skin before shaving.
- Use lubrication. Apply moisturizing shaving cream or gel and keep it wet while shaving. If your skin is very dry or sensitive, choose a product labeled for sensitive skin.
- Follow the direction of growth. Shave slowly with the grain, using short strokes and light pressure. Do not pull skin taut, and make no more than two passes over an area.
- Rinse as you go. Rinse the blade after strokes so hair and product do not build up on it. Rinse the skin thoroughly when you finish.
- Calm the skin. If it feels helpful, hold a cool, damp cloth against freshly shaved skin. A soothing aftershave is optional; stop using it if it burns or stings.
- Maintain the tool. Replace disposable or single-blade razor blades after about 5 to 7 shaves, keep tools dry between uses, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and replacing electric-razor parts.
What to avoid when bumps appear
- Do not stretch your skin to get a closer shave.
- Avoid repeated close passes and heavy pressure.
- Do not pluck hairs within bumps; plucking can worsen irritation.
- Do not keep using an aftershave or other product that stings or burns.
Not every acne-like bump is an ingrown hair. Folliculitis, acne, infection, and other conditions can look similar; the AAD explains this in its guide to folliculitis and acne-like breakouts.

When to see a dermatologist
Arrange an evaluation with a dermatologist if bumps persist despite changing your shaving habits, become painful or worse, appear infected, or leave scars or other lasting skin changes. A clinician can determine whether the problem is razor bumps or another condition and recommend appropriate care. The AAD advises people who continue to get razor bumps to see a board-certified dermatologist for relief.
