On Windows, a missing codec, player or Windows issue, display refresh-rate mismatch, or audio output setting can each be involved. The steps below apply to Windows and Windows Media Player where specified; they are not universal instructions for VLC or other players, macOS, or Linux.
Start by narrowing down the problem
Before changing settings, note the exact symptom and any error code. Check whether the problem occurs with one file or all files, and whether another player can open the same file. These comparisons help distinguish a file-specific compatibility issue from a wider playback problem, but do not prove the cause by themselves.
- One file fails: Check that file’s format and codec requirements first.
- Several files fail in one player: Player compatibility, updates, or its library may be involved.
- Audio plays but there is no picture: Check codec compatibility; the cause can depend on the player and version.
- Picture plays but there is no sound: Check the Windows output device, volume, mute state, and audio enhancements.
- Playback stalls on multiple displays: Compare the displays’ refresh rates.
Check whether the file format and codec are supported
A video file’s container or extension does not tell the whole story: the player also needs to support the codecs used for its video and audio streams. Microsoft says a missing or unsupported codec can prevent Windows Media Player from playing a file. Windows includes support for formats such as MPEG-4 (H.264), H.263, VC-1, WMV, DV, VP8, and Motion JPEG; files using other formats may need an additional codec. Microsoft also lists optional extensions for MPEG-2, HEVC (H.265), VP9, AV1, and OGG formats. Availability and requirements can vary by Windows version and installed software. If only one file fails, check its format and codec details before installing anything. Add a codec only if the file requires it, and verify that the software is appropriate for your Windows version. Prefer official or otherwise trusted sources; avoid installing a broad codec bundle as a first step.

Fix stuttering, freezing, skipping, or lagging in Windows Media Player
For Windows Media Player playback problems—including stuttering, freezing, skipping, lagging, or no sound—Microsoft recommends checking compatibility and codecs, installing available Windows updates, and considering whether the player library is corrupted. Its guidance also covers restoring the library and clearing player history. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s troubleshooting page for the Windows Media Player version you use; do not assume its instructions apply to a different player.
Library restoration or clearing history is relevant when the issue is with Windows Media Player rather than a single incompatible file. Keep the exact error message and file details if the problem persists.

Check Windows video playback and display settings
For video apps covered by Windows’ video playback settings, open Settings > Apps > Video playback and review the available options. The settings and options shown can vary by Windows version and app.
If video stalls on multiple monitors
Microsoft notes that different refresh rates on multiple monitors can cause video to stall or start and stop repeatedly in covered Windows video apps. It suggests matching the monitors’ refresh rates. This is worth checking when playback problems happen with multiple displays; it is not a general fix for every black screen or playback failure. Fix no sound while video plays
If the picture works but the audio does not, first check that Windows is sending sound to the intended output device. Then inspect the connection, device and app volume, and mute controls. If sound is still missing, try disabling audio enhancements. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
When audio plays but the screen stays black
A black screen with audio is not enough to identify a single cause. A codec problem is one possibility for Windows Media Player: Microsoft documents a missing-codec case specifically for Windows Media Player 11. That legacy-player example should not be treated as proof that codecs explain the same symptom in every player or Windows version. Check the file’s compatibility and codec details, then use the troubleshooting guidance for the player and Windows version you actually have.

If the video still will not play
Keep a record of the exact error, whether other files work, whether another player can open the same file, and any available codec details. Those observations help identify whether the failure follows the file, the player, the sound output, or the display setup. The Microsoft steps here are Windows-specific; procedures for other operating systems and third-party players depend on their own documentation.
