Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If apps or an iPadOS update won’t install because your iPad is low on space, start at Settings > General > iPad Storage. Check what is using capacity, remove or offload items you can restore or no longer need, then check available space and try again. If an update still fails, storage may not be the cause.
Check what is using iPad storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPad Storage.
- Review the available-space reading, any recommendations, and the list of apps and their storage use. Apple’s storage instructions explain this screen and the content breakdown.
Use the list to find the largest items before deleting anything. The space shown for an app may not include some cached or temporary data, so its displayed usage may not account for every byte currently occupied.
Free space without losing content you need
Start with items that are easy to download again or that you no longer need locally. Depending on how you use your iPad, storage may be occupied by downloaded videos, documents in Files, app files kept for offline work, Messages attachments, photos and videos, or apps you rarely use. iPadOS may show recommendations on the iPad Storage screen; review what each action removes before applying it. Apple’s iPad storage guide describes these options.
- Remove offline media: Delete downloaded shows, films, or other media if you can stream or download them again later.
- Review Files: Remove local documents and downloads you no longer need, or move files elsewhere if you need to keep them.
- Check app-specific downloads: Some apps store offline files or other content. Remove only what you can restore or do without.
- Review Messages attachments: Large attachments can take space. Save anything you want to keep before removing it.
- Review photos and videos carefully: If you need the originals, first confirm they are backed up. A cloud copy and the iPad’s local capacity are separate: do not assume local storage has been freed until you have confirmed the backup and removal workflow.
After a cleanup, return to Settings > General > iPad Storage and check the available-space reading again.

Choose whether to offload or delete an app
On the iPad Storage screen, tap an app to see the available app-management choices. The difference matters if you want to preserve its local information:
| Choice | What it removes | What happens to documents and data |
|---|---|---|
| Offload App | The app itself | Documents and data are retained; you can download the app again if it remains available. |
| Delete App | The app and its related data | Related data is removed, so use this only if you no longer need it or have another way to restore it. |
Apple also documents Offload Unused Apps as an automatic option. Find the setting under Settings > Apps > App Store on supported iPadOS versions; on some versions, the route may appear as Settings > App Store. Turning it on allows unused apps to be offloaded while keeping their documents and data. For app installation or deletion controls, check whether Screen Time restrictions are enabled; Apple describes these controls in its App Store and Screen Time settings guide.

How much space do you need?
Apple Support advises maintaining at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns. That is performance guidance, not a guarantee that every app or iPadOS update will install with that amount available. Apple’s update instructions require enough device storage but do not give one universal free-space figure that guarantees installation for every update. Leave more room if the specific install still reports insufficient space, and follow the prompt or the iPad Storage recommendations.

Freeing space and retrying is a sensible first step when the error says there is not enough room. If the update continues to fail, use the wording of the error to consider other causes rather than repeatedly deleting files. Apple’s iPhone and iPad update troubleshooting guide covers issues such as an unsupported device, internet connectivity, inability to reach the update server, and update verification errors.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Check compatibility: Confirm that your iPad model supports the iPadOS version you are trying to install.
- Check the connection: Make sure the iPad has internet access and can reach Apple’s update service.
- Read the exact error: A verification or server message points to a different issue from a low-storage warning; follow Apple’s steps for that error.
External storage does not increase the iPad’s internal capacity and does not establish that apps or iPadOS updates can install to a removable drive. A compatible drive may help with a manual file-transfer workflow, but it is not a fix for an internal-storage installation error.
