For routine changes, start with LibreWolf’s built-in interface: use toolbar customization to rearrange or show controls, and the New Tab settings to adjust its content or choose a blank page if that option is available in your build. Mozilla’s current desktop Firefox guides document these steps, but LibreWolf’s menus and available options can vary by version and installation. For advanced preferences you want to carry across profiles or installations, LibreWolf documents librewolf.overrides.cfg.
Rearrange and show toolbar controls
Mozilla documents the following workflow for desktop Firefox. Check your installed LibreWolf interface as you go; labels and menus may differ by platform or version. See Mozilla’s toolbar customization guide.
- Open the application menu and choose More Tools > Customize toolbar…. On Firefox, you can also right-click an empty area of the toolbar or tab strip to open customization.
- Drag controls to rearrange them, move them between the toolbar and overflow menu, or drag unwanted controls into the customization area.
- Select Done to save the layout.
Not every control can be moved into the overflow menu; Mozilla gives the menu button as an example. The toolbar’s title-bar checkbox controls whether the title bar is shown. The Bookmarks Toolbar has its own visibility setting: Always Show, Never Show, or Only Show on New Tab. This is a separate bar from the tab strip.
Use Restore Defaults cautiously: Mozilla warns that restoring defaults can also revert vertical tabs to horizontal tabs and reset the theme.

Change what appears on a new tab
Firefox’s New Tab page has a customization control, shown as a gear or pencil icon, for toggling page features. Mozilla also documents controls in the Home and startup settings for additional content, including sponsored shortcuts or stories and recent activity. The precise options can depend on region, language, and Firefox version; inspect your LibreWolf build rather than assuming every Firefox option is present. See Mozilla’s New Tab customization guide.
Choose a blank page
In the documented Firefox settings, open Settings > Home, find New Windows and Tabs, and set New tabs to Blank Page. Confirm that this control appears in your LibreWolf version before relying on it.
Personalize the page, if the controls are available
Firefox’s documented interface can offer built-in wallpapers, a custom color, or a local image as wallpaper; Mozilla says a selected image is kept locally rather than uploaded to Mozilla. Its shortcuts can also be pinned, dismissed, rearranged, and displayed in a chosen number of rows. These are Firefox-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every LibreWolf build exposes the same controls.

The documented built-in controls establish content choices and a blank-page option; they do not establish that LibreWolf’s built-in settings let you enter an arbitrary URL for every new tab. Do not assume that setting a homepage also changes new tabs: check the separate New tabs control.
When to use LibreWolf’s override file
For visible layout and New Tab content, use the built-in controls where they are available. LibreWolf separately documents changing preferences through Settings or about:config, and using librewolf.overrides.cfg to change defaults across profiles or installations and to back up or port preferences. The project describes the file as “a great way to change your default settings across multiple profiles and installations, which means that it also allows you to easily backup and port your preferences.” See LibreWolf’s settings and overrides documentation.

The overrides file may need to be created, and its location depends on the operating system and installation method, including Flatpak, other Linux installations, XDG paths, macOS, Windows, and the portable launcher. Follow the current official instructions for your specific installation rather than copying a path for another system. LibreWolf notes that if a preference appears more than once, the last one applied takes precedence. This is an advanced preference route, not a general instruction to paste arbitrary configuration or CSS snippets.
