Yes, a Galaxy S23 can use two SIM lines at once on supported models—usually one physical nano-SIM and one eSIM—but that does not mean two eSIMs, two calls, or two mobile-data connections run simultaneously. Samsung describes the S23 as Dual SIM with Nano/eSIM on its specified U.S. model, while noting that most Galaxy devices can have only one eSIM active at a time. Exact model and carrier compatibility varies by region.

What “at the same time” means on a Galaxy S23

The S23’s dual-SIM feature lets two lines be enabled on supported variants. You can use a physical nano-SIM alongside an eSIM, then choose which line handles calls, text messages, and mobile data. Samsung’s U.S. business specifications list the Galaxy S23 as “Dual SIM” with a “Nano / eSIM” slot type; that specification applies to the listed variant, not every regional model (Samsung U.S. Galaxy S23 Verizon specifications).

Two enabled lines are not the same as two eSIM profiles active together. Samsung says most Galaxy devices allow only one eSIM to be active at a time. For most S23 users, the practical two-line arrangement is therefore one active eSIM plus one physical SIM, subject to the device variant and carrier support (Samsung Canada eSIM guidance; Samsung Gulf eSIM and SIM guidance).

What each line can do

Use How dual-SIM works
Outgoing calls You can choose a preferred SIM for calls in SIM manager. The phone does not provide two independent active voice calls simply because two lines are enabled.
Incoming calls Both lines can be available while the phone is idle. Under Samsung’s described Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) behavior, the other SIM becomes inactive for calls and data while one line has an active call, so a call to the second number may not alert you.
Text messages You can select a preferred SIM for messages. Features such as RCS and carrier-specific messaging may depend on the carrier, app, software, and data connection.
Mobile data Select one SIM for mobile data. The phone does not combine both lines into simultaneous mobile-data connections.

Samsung documents a data-switching option that can use the other SIM for data if the preferred SIM cannot connect. It is a fallback, not concurrent data service, and Samsung warns that additional charges may apply (Galaxy S23 series user manual).

What happens when you are already on a call?

Samsung describes the S23’s dual-SIM operation as DSDS. When a call is connected on one line, the other SIM is deactivated for calls and data in the behavior Samsung documents. As a result, you should not assume that a call to the other number will reach the phone normally, or that the second line’s mobile data will continue during the call.

Using “Dual SIM always on”

Samsung’s service guidance describes a “Dual SIM always on” option that can forward calls to the other SIM while you are on a call. This relies on call forwarding rather than keeping both SIMs independently active. Availability depends on the carrier and region, and forwarding may incur charges. Check with both carriers about whether forwarding is supported and what it costs before enabling it (Samsung service guidance on eSIM and dual-SIM behavior).

How to add an eSIM and choose which line to use

  1. Add the eSIM: Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
  2. Activate with a QR code: Choose Add eSIM > Scan QR code, then scan the code supplied by your carrier. Other activation methods depend on the carrier and device.
  3. Set line preferences: In SIM manager, choose the preferred SIM for calls and messages, and select the SIM for mobile data.
  4. Configure fallback data if needed: Review the data-switching setting if you want the phone to use the other SIM when the preferred one cannot connect. Confirm potential charges with your carrier.

These paths come from Samsung’s S23 series manual. Menu wording can vary with software version and region, and a QR code or carrier simple setup is not guaranteed to be available for every plan.

Check your exact model and carrier before relying on eSIM

eSIM availability is not uniform across every S23 sold worldwide. Samsung’s regional product specifications and support pages describe particular variants: for example, its Australian compatibility guide covers Australian devices and settings may vary. Samsung’s general guidance directs customers to their service provider for eSIM availability and activation. Confirm your exact model number and carrier’s support for that model before buying, transferring, or activating a plan (Samsung Australia eSIM compatibility list; Samsung Canada eSIM guidance).
