If your iPhone shows “SOS,” “No Service,” or “Searching,” first check for an AT&T carrier-settings update, then refresh the cellular connection and confirm the correct line is active. These steps can fix a phone-side settings or connection issue; an inactive line, coverage gap, or outage needs AT&T’s help.
What “SOS,” “No Service,” and “Searching” mean
These messages mean the iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. “SOS” is not ordinary AT&T service: in supported regions, the phone may still be able to place emergency calls through another carrier. Apple notes that cellular service must be available in your location for reconnection steps to work. Apple’s troubleshooting guide explains these status messages.
Refresh the connection first
- Open Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Leave it on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- If the iPhone does not reconnect, restart it and check the status bar again.
This makes the phone retry its cellular connection. It will not restore an inactive line or resolve an AT&T outage.
Check for an AT&T carrier-settings update
Carrier settings tell the iPhone how to connect to a carrier’s network. Apple says updates can improve connectivity and performance and may add features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling. A newly inserted SIM or set-up eSIM may also need the carrier’s settings.

- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi if possible.
- Go to Settings > General > About and wait briefly.
- If a carrier-settings prompt appears, follow its instructions and install the update.
Apple says an available update installs in less than a minute. If a mandatory update has already been installed, the prompt may offer OK instead of Update. The current version appears beside Carrier; its displayed label can vary by software version or language. See Apple’s manual carrier-settings update instructions.
Make sure the AT&T line and SIM or eSIM are active
On an iPhone with Dual SIM, confirm that the intended AT&T line is switched on: go to Settings > Cellular, tap the line, and check Turn On This Line. If the line is missing, contact AT&T for eSIM setup or check that the physical SIM is properly inserted.

If you use a physical SIM, remove and reinsert it only if appropriate for your model and situation. Ask AT&T for a replacement if the SIM is damaged or does not fit correctly. AT&T says eSIM service must be on an active plan and activated over Wi-Fi or transferred using its activation steps. SIM or eSIM changes can also require account-side activation; use AT&T Wireless support for account-specific help.
If cellular data is still broken, do not guess the APN
An access point name (APN) defines the network path used for cellular data. Some carriers require APN settings, but Apple says you can view or edit them only when the carrier allows it. Incorrect values can disrupt data connectivity and may cause additional charges. If APN controls are unavailable or data still does not work, ask AT&T for the correct settings rather than copying values from another carrier, phone, or forum. When to contact AT&T
If the iPhone still cannot connect after the steps above, ask AT&T to check the parts of service that only the carrier can manage:
- Whether the account is active and in good standing.
- Whether service is available at your location and a local outage is affecting it.
- Whether the device is blocked or barred, and whether the line has the right plan and provisioning.
- Whether a recent SIM or eSIM change was activated correctly.
AT&T provides wireless account troubleshooting and outage-check options through its customer-support page. If the problem occurs only while traveling outside AT&T’s home network, check Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming for the relevant line. Roaming availability and charges depend on your plan, so confirm the terms with AT&T.

Use Reset Network Settings only after simpler checks
Resetting network settings can remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and reset cellular, VPN, and APN settings. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi, and managed configurations may require attention. Because of these side effects, save this step for after connection refresh, carrier-settings, line, and AT&T checks.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings and confirm.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and check whether cellular service returns.

When to seek Apple service
If AT&T confirms the account and network are fine but the iPhone still will not connect, a device problem may need service. Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics on iPhone models running iOS 18 or later. Follow Apple’s service guidance if hardware is suspected.
