You can use built-in satellite features only if your phone model and location are supported. Apple offers Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone 14 or later in supported regions; Google’s documented Satellite SOS is for Pixel devices from Pixel 9 onward, except Pixel 9a. These are limited satellite services—not a switch for general satellite internet—and a connection is not guaranteed.
Check whether your phone and location are eligible
Before trying to connect, confirm the exact phone model, where you are, and what you want to do. Apple and Google provide separate services with different device and regional requirements.
- iPhone: Apple says Emergency SOS via satellite is available on iPhone 14 or later in supported regions. Availability can depend on government approvals and market requirements. Some phone purchase regions are excluded, so check Apple’s current Emergency SOS via satellite availability and support page for both your location and the phone’s origin.
- Google Pixel: Google documents Satellite SOS for Pixel devices since Pixel 9, excluding Pixel 9a, in supported locations. Consult Google’s Satellite SOS help page for the current country list and conditions.
- Other Android phones: The Google instructions cited here apply to Pixel. They do not establish that other Android models have the same feature or settings.
Both services are intended for situations where ordinary mobile and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. Being in a listed country with a supported phone does not guarantee a usable satellite link; conditions and the on-screen guidance matter.
How to use satellite SOS on iPhone
Emergency SOS via satellite is an emergency feature, not a permanent setting that gives an iPhone satellite service everywhere. When you cannot reach emergency services over cellular or Wi-Fi, follow the emergency interface on the phone to attempt a satellite connection. Apple guides users through the connection process on screen; a clear view of the sky may be needed.

Apple also supports other satellite functions in some regions, including Messages via satellite, Find My location sharing, and Roadside Assistance. These are not all available everywhere. Messages via satellite can send messages outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage on supported iPhones, but some messaging features are unavailable; sending SMS by satellite depends on carrier support. Check Apple’s Use Messages via satellite on your iPhone guidance for feature details and current availability.
How to set up Satellite SOS on Google Pixel
Google’s documented Android satellite feature is Pixel Satellite SOS. It is for emergency situations when there is no Wi-Fi or mobile network, not general-purpose satellite internet. Google says Google Messages must be the default messaging app.

- Review the setup and availability information shown on the phone. Set Google Messages as the default messaging app if prompted or if it is not already selected.
- When an emergency occurs without ordinary network access, follow the phone’s Satellite SOS prompts to attempt a connection and contact emergency services.
Google cautions: “Connectivity depends on network coverage, network conditions, and the government agency of each respective carrier.” Its listed locations do not guarantee coverage. Check the Google Pixel Satellite SOS page for current location and service conditions.
Satellite SOS is not satellite internet
Built-in iPhone and Pixel satellite features provide specific emergency or messaging functions where supported; they do not turn a phone into a general satellite internet terminal. If you want to send routine messages outside cellular coverage, check the precise messaging feature, regional availability, and carrier requirements rather than assuming that SOS support includes ordinary texting.

If your phone lacks a supported built-in feature, a dedicated communicator is a separate option. Garmin says its inReach Messenger can work on its own or pair with a smartphone app. Garmin’s Iridium satellite network overview says inReach messaging and SOS work beyond cellphone tower range and require an active satellite subscription. This is separate hardware and does not enable native satellite connectivity on an unsupported phone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before you rely on satellite service
- Your exact device model and, for iPhone, its purchase region.
- Whether the service is available in your current country or area; location lists and approvals can change.
- Whether you need emergency SOS, location sharing, roadside assistance, or ordinary messaging—features have different requirements.
- Any carrier support required for SMS via satellite.
- The phone’s on-screen instructions and whether you can get a sufficiently clear view of the sky.
Satellite SOS is an additional way to seek help, not a guarantee of connection or rescue. Use the phone’s emergency instructions and follow any directions from emergency responders.
