To find data centers and environmental permits near you, start with EPA’s ECHO facility search, then check the relevant state environmental agency and city or county planning records. ECHO is useful for existing regulated facilities and compliance history, but it is not a comprehensive index of proposed projects or local approvals. A missing result is a reason to broaden your search—not proof that no proposal or permit exists.
How do I find data centers near me?
Search by both location and identity. A proposed site may be listed under its owner, developer, utility, subsidiary, parcel, or campus name rather than “data center.” Gather as many of these details as you can:
- City or county, state, and ZIP code
- Street address or parcel number
- Project, campus, facility, or site name
- Developer, landowner, owner, or utility name
- Permit or application number, if known
Try spelling and address variants as well as the project name. EPA ECHO supports searches by location, facility name, and identifier; state and local systems have their own search fields and coverage.
Search EPA ECHO for facilities and compliance records
- Open the ECHO Quick Search and search the city and state or ZIP code.
- Repeat the search with the facility name, street address, or known identifier.
- Open relevant facility results and review linked program records, permit details, and enforcement and compliance history.
ECHO is designed for facility, compliance, and enforcement research. It may help locate an operating or otherwise regulated facility, but it does not establish whether an early-stage proposal has a local land-use case or an application filed only with a state agency.

Search federal water-discharge records when relevant
For National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) records, EPA’s ICIS-NPDES search guide describes searches by geography, facility name or NPDES ID, industrial classification, chemical parameter, and permit issue or expiration dates. EPA recommends starting with a small geographic area. Search results may show permit dates, facility location, discharge points, and monitored parameters; consult the permit and monitoring documents to understand what they cover.
How can I look up environmental permits in my county?
There is no single national index in the cited government tools that establishes every proposed data center and permit. EPA ECHO, federal program databases, state permit systems, and local land-use records serve different purposes. Search more than one level of government, and treat a map marker or brief listing as a lead rather than a substitute for the underlying file.

Identify the likely permitting authority
- Use EPA’s Permitting Authority Map to select the location and the relevant permit program.
- Note whether the program is handled directly by EPA or by a state, territory, Tribal nation, or local agency.
- Confirm the responsible office with the agency shown on the map or the relevant EPA regional office.
EPA describes the map as a planning aid, not an official agency determination. Its initial program list is limited, and it does not settle every jurisdictional question. EPA’s state and territorial environmental agency directory is a useful starting point for finding the state agency, which may direct you to a regional office, water management district, local air district, Tribal authority, or another program office.
Search the state agency’s application and document systems
On the state environmental agency website, look for application searches and document archives. Useful search terms include “permit applications,” “air permits,” “stormwater,” “NPDES,” “wetlands,” “environmental resource permit,” “public notices,” and “permit documents,” combined with the project or parcel name. A status search may point to a record without providing the full application file, so check for a separate archive or docket.

Florida illustrates how state-specific these systems can be. Florida DEP directs users to an application search for matters under review, a shared water permitting portal searchable by site address, permit number, or map, a GIS tool with linked permit and compliance records, an archive of publicly available documents, and a subscription service for geographic application alerts. Florida says the shared water portal’s records date back to 2007 and exclude projects exempt from permitting. Those coverage details apply to Florida’s portal, not to other states.
Check city and county planning records for early proposals
If no environmental permit appears, look at the relevant city or county planning department, zoning board, board of supervisors or commissioners, and public-meeting agenda and minutes pages. Search project, developer, parcel, and terms such as “rezoning,” “special use,” or “site plan.” Ask the planning clerk whether there is a pending land-use case, site-plan application, hearing notice, or public file. The responsible office and terminology depend on the locality.

Where can I see permits for a proposed data center?
Check each source for the project stage it actually records. An announcement, local planning case, permit application, draft permit, issued permit, and operating record are different things. A facility’s appearance in a database does not by itself establish that a proposed project has all approvals, and a permit covers only the activities and conditions specified in its terms.

What kinds of records might apply?
The project label alone does not determine which permits are required. Requirements depend on the activity, environmental effects, permit program, and jurisdiction. Potential record categories include:

- Air: EPA describes Title V operating permits for stationary pollution sources and New Source Review (NSR) permits for construction of new stationary air-pollution sources and certain modifications. EPA or an authorized state, territorial, local, or Tribal authority may issue them. Check the specific permit file and current local rules for any generator-related requirements.
- Water discharges: NPDES permits regulate facility discharges into waters of the United States and may be individual or general permits. The relevant file can identify the receiving water, discharge points, limits, and monitoring requirements.
- Wetlands and fill: Clean Water Act Section 404 applies to discharges of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States, including certain wetlands. EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers share aspects of the program. The Corps issues permits except where a state or Tribal program has assumed authority.
- Hazardous waste and injection wells: RCRA permits cover facilities that treat, store, or dispose of hazardous waste. The Underground Injection Control program covers specified injection wells. These are possible categories, not blanket requirements for data centers.
- Land use: Zoning, subdivision, site-plan, and other local land-use proceedings are separate from the environmental permit examples above.
How do I review a permit file?
For each record, note the agency, permit or application ID, applicant, site location, activity covered, status, date received, decision date, notice date, deadline, and links to the application and supporting technical documents. Compare the approved plans and permit conditions with the activity described in the filing; do not infer a project’s impacts from its facility label or a map marker alone.
EPA describes permits as setting limits and conditions on emissions, pollutant discharges, and environmental disturbances. The actual record tells you which limits and activities apply to that permit.
How do I find a public hearing or comment deadline?
Use the current agency notice or docket as the controlling source. Confirm the deadline, accepted submission method, docket or permit number, and whether a hearing is scheduled. If a page appears outdated or gives no deadline, contact the person or office named in the official notice and ask for the current docket and complete application file.
Air-permit rulemaking status as of October 4, 2026: EPA announced on July 1, 2026, a proposed rule to eliminate minimum federal public-participation requirements for state and local minor-source NSR programs. EPA’s announcement said the proposed comment period would be 45 days after publication in the Federal Register. That announcement does not establish whether the proposal became final or the actual docket dates. Check the current Federal Register docket and the applicable state or local air-agency rules rather than relying on the proposed schedule.
What if a project does not show up in EPA ECHO?
Broaden the search rather than treating the missing result as proof that no project or permit exists. A project may still be at the announcement or local planning stage, records may be held in a state system, or a different name or address may be used. Search name and address variants, then check the state permit system and local planning records. If you still cannot locate the file, ask the likely permitting authority or planning office where it posts pending applications, public notices, and documents.
